: YJ tilt steering column question: Can it be tightened

My '91 YJ's tilt steering wheel rattles and moves around, back and forth, up and down nearly an inch in each direction. I pulled the steering whell off, and tried to see if there was any way to tighten from that end, but no luck.

Is there a nut, or bearing/bushing on the backside of the tilt mechanism? Or do I need a new column?

Any help would be appreciated.

Since you already searched, this link http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=43082&highlight=steering+column probably wont help you much. It took me about 2 minutes to find it and i was gonna look for more but I remembered that I have fixed about 30 of these GM columns and mine is fine :D

Never done it on a jeep column, but did it a few times on my 1/2 ton chevy truck. Problem was there is 1 bolt I could not get to, and the whole thing eventually loosened up after a year or so. Best bet is to replace the column, I went with a non-tilt.
Good luck.

My 1990 wrangler had the same problem... I started to dig into the column, but got worried about putting all the light connections snd stuff back together, so I found a local mechanic that did it for $75... I know it's a lot of money, but the peace of mind of knowing it was done right was worth it to me... he just tightened up the blots again, but used locktite on them this time. The factory didn't use any kind of locktite, so they loosen up after 10 years or so... especially if you wheel it and geta lot of bumps and bounces...
