: Where to buy Coil over Shocks?
Where would be a good place to buy coil over shocks (King, Sway A way, etc..) beside the companies themselves? Most of them don’t sell directly to the public. I’m looking for a place to sell me the shocks and coils. I’m finally going to do the conversion :).
Thanks
What exactly are you looking for?
BossBuilt 05-13-2002, 08:03 PM Sky Jacker is suppose to be coming out with them this month...Avalanche has them but they like money...about 2K and their service is weak right now.
I was going with coilovers until I decided I didn't want to deal with avalanche, I'm not at the top of their list if you know what I mean..
But there stuff is nice.
I desided to go with a home made suspension Idea I've been nurturing and to keep saving the bucks for other mods.
slowJEEP 05-13-2002, 10:34 PM I talked to a guy at bilstein about some reservoirless coilovers they have and they were like 350 and some change for a dual rate set up. That's about 150 a piece cheaper than sway-a-ways. I've never overheated a shock on my jeep so I think the reservoirs can be left to the jump-happy guys.

The reason for the reservior is not just for more oil capacity. They are used to house the floating piston in the shock. Yes, Sway-A-Way makes an emuslion (non-reservior) shock similar to the Bilstein you are describing. In these shocks the floating pistion is held inside the shock cylinder. With these shocks it is neccessary to have a longer shock cylinder than a remote reservior shock has. This is to keep the main piston from smashing into the floating piston. As for pricing:
Sway-A-Way 2" Emulsion Shock any length (6" to 16") $216.00
Sway-A-Way 2" Dual Rate Kits $ 74.00
TOTAL $290.00
FireTruck 05-14-2002, 01:13 AM For sway-a-way dealers...

SlowJEEP, could you pass the Bilstein contact information if you have them around?
I’m converting an extended wheelbase (103”) YJ to coil over shocks. It’s going to be lifted only 2.5” and use 31” tires with stock wheel backspacing. That’s why there isn’t enough space for any other type of suspension in there. I’ll be using the 2” diameter coil over shock. I don’t really want the remote reservoir to save money besides, this will not be a Baja truck.
Thanks

Those prices are correct but you are leaving out a very needed item. The springs. I ordered 2.5" swayaway c/o's a month ago. Swayaway does not make springs for that size (3" spring). I had to get springs from eibach and the 8 springs ran me over $700. Total price is around 2000 for everything. If you are wanting cheap, look at doetsch at www.doetsch-shocks.com
I ran these for awhile. Total set was about $1200.

OK, so add $35-$55 percoil for a 2.5 ID spring. For a dual rate add about $100.00 Do the Bilstein's include coils.....??????
I just checked the Doetsch site and 2.2" non reservior shocks are $215.00.

I believe the purpose of the remote reservior is to keep the air pocket that's required for the shock to function properly out of the shock cylinder.
This is suppose to keep the air out of the oil in the shock it's self.
When the oil mixes with the air the shocks effectiveness changes(becomes softer)...this is why sand buggies and desert racers need them.
Aggro 05-14-2002, 04:01 PM I'll take the liberty: :flipoff2: 13. If you have to ask, you don't need it. :flipoff2:

That is not the purpose of the remote reservior. What yoiu desrcibed is what the floating piston does. It keeps the Nitrogen seperated from the oil. When the oil mixes wih the gas it can emulsify. This emulsification changes the desity of the shock oil which, in turn decreases the dampening characteristics of the shock absorber.
As stated above the main purpose of the remote reservior is to house the floating piston so a shorter shock cylinder can be used.:skull:

If you were running the Doetsch shocks, why did you switch to the Sway Away shocks?
I’m curious too, why did you change the doetsch coil overs?
Although their price is very attractive compared to the other coil overs, I would pay extra for reliability. This Jeep will often travel deep into the North African Sahara and that’s not the place to have problems :nuke: .

Thanks for the info Pig,
Some have air.... and I agree with your description of how it works though I have only read a LITTlE about them...
I was just stating the purpose of the remote reservoir(as a unit).. You left out that part.:D thanks for the details thats why I like this board.;)

Now when I ordered my shocks for my foruwheeler I didn't get the front rezzies because the guy said I wouldn't need them. He said he didn't think I would be working the shock to the point where I would need the rezzies to cool the fluid down. He stated somehting abotu the rezzies were for extra fluid capacity to help keep the shocks cooler for a shock that is beign worked alot(Like a desert racer)
This is the same style shock/coilover design as the fullsize ones..

It doesn't sound like that guy knew what he was talking about.

I did not like the quality of the doetsch on MY rig. It is my belief that it is too heavy for them. I went to the sway a way for the larger body of the shock. That and the quality of the slider seems to be better. My assumptions may be wrong about the doetsch c/o's but I just had too many probs out of them. I thought it was time for change.
