I can't get my pilot bearing installed without mauling it out of form So I'm pretty much fed up with trying to install it. Any suggestion? Vehicle is a 90 YJ with 4.2L

Dumb question but are you sure you have the correct one? If you are sure you do, grease the bearing and grease the crank where it slides into. if all else fails, shave a couple thousands off. I wouldnt run without one. The shaft will walk causing all sorts of problems.

Mine installed pretty easily on my 2.5L, are you using one from a clutch kit or did you buy everything separately?

It should slide on pretty easy. Go easy on the grease as you don't want there to be enough to slop off and get onto the clutch disk.

I would agree that you probably have the wrong throwout bearing. Go into the parts shop with a dial caliper and your "new" throwout bearing and ask them for the throwout bearing for your 90 YJ and see what they give you. Never hurts to ask.

You do NOT want to run without one, it will ruin the bearings in your transmission in a very short time. Does your new one look the same as the old one? Is it a needle bearing type or a bushing type?

Pilot Bearing?
you dont need a pilot bearing, those are optional, im unshure why EVery manufacturer puts one in manual vehicles.

PUT IT IN. but you cant just "shave" it down, it needs to be turned down to make shure it is centered other wise you will get a nasty shudder and possibly burn out the bearing on the input shaft of your trans.

Don't run the vehicle without one. Too many bad things are gonna happen. Think about it...The input shaft is loaded with the clutch disc and it needs to be supported on both ends so it will slide on the splines. I'm not certain what pilot bearing/bushing you have, but I'd get a pair of calipers out and start checking. They are a press fit. You will have to install them with a BFH and a couple well placed 'whacks'.
