Figured I'd post this here since the local boards don't see many big builds. This is redneck and budget at it's best, and I welcome all input good or bad, so in other words, FLAME AWAY:flipoff2:

This is phase 2.

Starting on December of 2005, I Built an S-10 on Fullsize diffs, Sbc, TBI, with Dual Trannies(700r4/sm465) and an np205. D44HD Front, 14ff rear, with 37" MTR's

Wheeled it a couple times.

Had major issues with it stripping the bolts out of the auto and pissing ATF everywhere.

Pulled it off the road for a couple changes and it escalated from there.

The new truck will consist of (or in other words, the major changes)-

1. Dodge kingpin dually Dana 60
2. sm465/sm465 dual trannies
3. Recentered H1 beadlocks, with 49" Iroks
4. 57" Chevy rears in the front 8" shackles, 63" Chevy rears in the back with an 8" shackle and 32" long buggy leaves.
5. Dovenosed 20"
6. Dovetailed 20"
7. Full skidplate
8. Full exo/internal cage.
9. 1 piece tilt front end
10. 1 piece tilt rear end
11. No dash, interior panels, or anything that doesn't help it move.
12. OBA, with tanks, and OBW

and the big one.....

13. No more unexpected failures and parts breakage, that can't be fixed on the trail

intersting. why dual 465's?

I wanted something cheap, strong and different.

Regearing diffs is pricey, and no selectability
doublers give one or two extra options, but the price range was in the $1000 mark.
So i started looking into dual trannies.
The original setup ran a 700r4 in front of a 465, and worked awesome. All designed by myself, and the input was TIG welded by a buddy of mine. However, it had issues with it tourquing over and backing the bolts out of the t-case adapter of the automatic. Biggest issue was that when you hit the brakes, the redution would twist stock trans mounts in half, and break motor mounts at idle. So the concept was strong, but i missed having a manual and needed a clutch to interrupt the torque multiplication.

The original setup (auto/manual) cost me around $400 and took about 6 weeks planning, and a week to build

This setup cost me $120 (not including the clutch) I got the465's for free, and made the adapter rmyself. 120 to have a new input welded, and I'm golden
2nd trans adds 18" to the length of the drivetrain, but I have More gearing options than I'll ever use, 407:1 in reverse/reverse, 35 spline front output/input, and other than the shaft it's all off the shelf parts.

That answer it?:smokin:

I'm working on an actual write-up of both setups, as I've hada few emails regarding them, and they'll be posted up likely right after I have a chance to test this one a little.:D

Why do you not think you will have the same problems with a even lower gearing?I see the 2nd tranny getting blown.I could be wrong.

spidr
01-08-2007, 07:00 PM
The major damage was occuring while the truck was in gear, and I had to hit the brakes. When the motor torqued over, ultimately there are only 4 bolts threaded into the aluminum tailhousing which hold one tranny to the other.

With the dual manual setup i have 8 bolts threaded into a cast housing, which has to be stronger, and the clutch disengages the motor so it doesn't twist up the drivetrain.

In theory I could have put in a higher stall torque converter, but in the end, my prerference has never been to wheel autos, and I end up with a stronger drivetrain as well.

I've also stiffened everything up to try to fight the torque by making a crossmember for the rear which bolts the back of the t-case, all the way arount the front output shaft cover(on the rear of the case), and also to the PTO cover on the drivers side, and uses leaf spring bushings at the frame mounts, it has a crossmember under the adapter between the trannies which uses a stock auto tranny mount, and the motor is chained down.

Awesome truck!

Did you find an off-the-shelf part to bolt the two trannies together, or did you have to make something custom?

spidr
01-09-2007, 03:25 PM
Everything in the duals is my own handiwork, short of the shaft welding. the goal is to have a one piece shaftmade once it's tested, but I basically mirrored a t-case adapter and spent 10 or 20 hours reproducing it. I pull up the pics so you can see the jist of it as soon as I can.

spidr
01-09-2007, 04:39 PM
This is the shaft and the duals adapter, 35 spline beef and a bunch of time with a micrometer. The adapter is multi piece, I had to make each step for the bearing retainer lip out of 1/8" plate, the 5/8" for the main section, 4" 1/2 wall tube for the cross piece and another piece of 58" to mimmick the bellhousing. Then a whole lot of bracing.

The crossmembers shown are basicly what's in there now, the t-case one has been cut down quite a bit to clear exhaust and other stuff, but the end result is still pure beef. It's made of a piece of 5/8" plate, wih a captured tube which holds a leaf spring bushing, and The PTO cover is the same 5/8" with a 7/8" bolt bracing it to the main x-member. The front one was straight across, but had to be clearanced for the driveshaft when I raised the whole drivetrain to get a flat belly.

And one of my favorite parts, After I shaved the 14 bolt, it would peel the cover open like a tin can, and the ring gear started to groove out the cover, so I waned something original to protect it.

Looks badass! How well did it go down steep hills with the 3/4 eliptic rear suspension? Or do you use a rear winch to suck the rear down?

spidr
01-09-2007, 05:41 PM
There's a chain from the truss to the shock hoop that limits droop at the pumpkin to about 6". Nothing I've been on yet is a long steep decent, b ut i've had it steep enough to bury the front bumper into the ground, and i never felt like it would go over, I may just be lucky though

I have a 2000lb ATV winch that I'm planning to throw in the back, but haven't bothered yet. i'm considering getting a high angle rear shaft, Then the chain would only prevent unloading, where as right now it is primarily there to save the rear shaft. The winch right now runs the risk of having it missadjusted, and possibly binding and breaking the rear joints

Looks like I have a few weeks off, so this should be rolling again quick. Picking up my last 3 tires this weekend hopefully, and should be sitting at ride height after the weekend. Pricing out hydro assist rams right now as well, has to be on the cheap, and I don't want to modify a farm ram, Should be ordering something in the next little while.

Also getting ready to order tube, and get the cage done so I can finalize the bodywork.

Hopefully have some good pics soon.

Awesome build. I have seen dual 465's tried before, and while they gave great torque multiplication, the internediate shaft would not hold up. Even when he went with a cryo-treated unit, it continued to break.

Each setup is undoubted different, and I really like the idea of this two transmission setup. I hope you can work the bugs out.

spidr
01-15-2007, 12:58 PM
Most of the intermediate shaft designs I've seen involve a female/femle coupler similar to a 10 apline 205 shaft. Many guys recomended a 10 spline coupler with a clutch center welded in and i feelthat won't hold up.

The first time I did this with the auto/manual setup I tested by doing burnouts with welded rear and 37's, on dry pavement, and went nothing went wrong, I did 4000rpm neutral drops 1/2 dozen times and it held up so I went wheeling. As I said before, the only issues I had with that setup was that the automatics aluminun casing wouldn't handle the abuse from the extra torque.

I beat on my stuff hard, so if it breaks I'll find out, and if it works, then I'll update everyone as well

Welding with a 220v stick.
As for time.........I honestly couldn't guess.
I've spent at least a dozen weekends in the shop from Friday afternoon, straight through to Sunday night.
It's likely 1000's of hours counting research, trial and error, and actual building.
For example, there's over 20 hours of welding on the front diff SO FAR, and it's only about 2/3 done.
I quit keeping track a Long time ago.

With the old auto/manual setup, you had to stop and shift it like the t-case
With the new man/man setup, you can shift either trans by pushing the clutch. Synchros work in the 2nd trans just as well as the first.
