: SOA steering
YJscott2 01-08-2007, 04:16 PM when setting the perches what should i look for?
and what type of steering should i run,
i have a very very tight budget.
any sujestions would be good
its a HP dana 30
muddpuppy01 01-08-2007, 05:14 PM Hysteer is the only wat to go but its not cheap. When setting the perches make sure your caster is correct iirc 3* not sure
YJscott2 01-08-2007, 05:26 PM i heard when setin the front spring perches to weld them directly paralell to the old ones so u dont screw up your caster
muddpuppy01 01-08-2007, 05:45 PM best way for me would be to mock everything up ubolts perches springs. Then put wieght on the axle. Then measure the caster angle and adjust to the proper angle dont worry about the drive shaft angle. Only to adjust that would be to cut and turn the knuckles. Once the angle is set tack the perches so they dont move then remove the axle then fully weld it up

mudrebel360 01-08-2007, 10:01 PM what exactly is caster angle and how hard is it to cut the knuckles? thanks
currupt4130 01-08-2007, 10:27 PM Just go 180 from the SUA perches...
jibmaster145 01-08-2007, 11:22 PM I will take some reference pictures for you tomorrow on my YJ. I have a SOA with waggy springs so i wasn't able to weld the spring perches parallel to the stock ones. I had to find a stock YJ and measure the caster angle. You want your caster angle between 5* and 7*. Do exactly as mudpuppy01 said and be sure your rig is on level ground.
jibmaster145 01-08-2007, 11:42 PM Well I found a picture from when I did my SOA. Here is my pinion angle setup for a stock caster angle. The angle finder is reading 9* pinion angle at the bottom of a stock HP D30. Hard to see the angle but the picture is referencing where I took the angle measurement. Hope this helps.:D

Here is the setup I plan to go with. Like you I would also like to keep expenses low. Especially on a D30.:flipoff2: I figure this setup should work well until I find a D44 for the front. I have seen other rigs with similar setup with no problems.

In some locals it's illegal to run hiems in your steering if your rig sees the street.
That's what is stopping me for running BTF or MORE's steering kits. The law says I need TREs.
Just some food for thought.
BIG YJ 01-09-2007, 06:28 PM why cant you weld the perches parralel with waggy springs?
Angler1979 01-09-2007, 06:40 PM If you plan on running anything from Blue Torch Fabs you better factor in an extra month or two into the build waiting on parts it just took me 3 weeks to get a set of spring perches:mad3:
muddpuppy01 01-09-2007, 06:43 PM waggys are set up differently
Angler1979 01-09-2007, 06:51 PM what exactly is caster angle
Yeah?
VTJeepCJ84 01-09-2007, 07:53 PM what exactly is caster angle and how hard is it to cut the knuckles? thanks
Caster anlge is the angle of the knuckles, taken if you drew a line between the centers of the bolljoints. typicaly i believe 7* is stock in most vehicles. The top joint should be farther to the back of the jeep than the bottom. This helps with the return to center at highway speeds.
Cutting and rewelding knuckles is a waste of time on a Dana 30
