Blew the front gearcase apart with the injector pump gear !@&#$ It's a 92 intercooled turbo with over 200k so I dont want to spend too much $ if you know what i mean. So I'm looking for the front gearcase and injector pump gear. I'll have the part# tomorrow if anyone has any hooks on these I'd appreciate the info.

Was it the "killer dowel pin"? Check the TDR classifieds.

Already tried that, everyone I contacted will only sell a complete core. so I'm calling cummins and the dodge dealer today. Figured it out to be around 500$, I get the Mechanic Bro deal price on this stuff, so it wont hurt me too much, especially considering what I paid for the truck! Oh yeah I do believe that it was the "Killer Dowel Pin Syndrome %#$&^!). I'll find out more when I start twisting the whrenches on it next week.

Guess that's not toooo bad considering what some parts cost for the Cummins. Good luck with that, dude.

wilymeister---make sure you get the tab to keep the dowel pin in place if you don't get it - here in the Bay Area we have the tool to permanently fix it--email me if you're interested & I'll put you incontact with the guy who has it--they did 11-12 of them last Saturday--- csutton7@pacbell.net ---chris

Thanks for the info Chris. I bought everything from cummins last week and it cost me about 500$, The dowel was 1.68$, Thats one mighty annoying two dollar part! As far as the dowel I was just planning to knock a couple of punch marks around the cover side of the dowel hole. But if you have a better way I'm all ears. I didn't see any retainer clip in the parts diagram, so if there is one tell me where I can find it.
Thanks Bill

you can probably make one--just an "S" shaped pc of metal that will be held in by the closest bolt--which is right next to the pin---you could go back to cummins and ask them about it as it seems I read somewhere they have that little clip----it may be for the 24V engines-----the other option is to put it together and we set up a mtg somewhere--need electricity and air would be nice to perform the surgery--which amounts to tapping the cover and threading in a bolt that will go in front of the pin, thus preventing it from coming out---my good buddy has the tool to do all this-----let me know---you might be able to do the tapping and bolt thing your self since you will have the cover free---the bolt is a flat head with fine threads which sits flush with the cover once installed---I think there may be pics of it on the TDR----chris

Willymeister,

How'd it go replacing the front gearcase?

I just bought a 92 w250 w/213k miles and I just read up on the KDP, what a fuq story. I need to get that done before she goes pop.

Search the TDR (http://www.turbodieselregister.com) forums. Lots of great Cummins info there. Let us know how the 6 spd conversion goes. I have a '93 also.

78 ramcharger posted a pic for me on the ramcharger board, showed it with the retainer clip over the dowel, very helpful. I went to tdr site, they won't let you register for message board unless you also subscribe, f#*k em, I'm a cheap old f#*ker!

To be honest the $35 to subscribe is the best money a Cummins diesel owner can spend. If you get the answer to one question that could save you a trip to the stealer it's paid for itself. Then of course there's the BOMBing info.

Ditto on the TDR membership. I've been a member for over two years and have learned so much..... Great place to hang out too... I have more posts on the TDR web site than here...

One warning though.... You could get BOMBitis real quick and pretty soon you'll be buying up power upgrades and laying down
350+ HP to the rear wheels....

I can't seem to locate pics of this cover tapping and bolting procedure? anyone have the lowdown on it?
I drive a lot ofk every year and having something like that happen far from my shop could be incredibly pricy.

Well I pulled it all apart two weeks ago, wasn't the killer dowel pin as I previosly thought. turned out that the installer of the new injector pump mis-aligned the keyway in the injector gear! Looked to be crushed with a sh*&load of elbow grease, anyway, It's fixed and runs awesome now.
As for the kdp I removed the pin, knocked a couple of marks on the pin and the inside of the dowel hole in the block, applied a little green tite to the hole, put it all together and knocked a couple of dimples in the aluminum case. My boss did the same to his a few weeks ago when we were rolling in bearings and new main seals. I just couldnt see how threading 3/8 an inch into the hole and installing a plug would be any better than some locktite and dimples. Besides, why put something else inside the case that may have a chance of vibrating out and causing the same problem.

wilymeister--hopefully what you have done will work--the procedure which has worked is tapping a hole in the side of the case--and running a bolt into it that goes in front of the KDP(killer dowel pin) nothing can vibrate loose and end up inside the case---this is all done without removing the case--basically you remove the fan and flip the alternator out of the way to get the drill and tap into position---you need some compressed air also---the guys in my club did about 11-12 in one day----a TDR member made up the jigs to do the work and Performance Diesel has one--this is a whole lot easier than removing the cover and getting to the pin and it works--chris
