I have a TJ with a 5.5'' rubicon lift, dana44 w/ 4.10s and a detroit a Rubicon 241 transfer case, 35'' MTRs and a transmission that needs a rebulid. Now towing my boat with 4.10s is very slow on the hills....Do i put 4.88 front and rear and rebulid my stock transmission??? or do i keep my 4.10s witch i like on the HWY and put a Rubicon 6spd transmission with gives a lower 1st and for towing and a nice 6th on the HWY.......Rubicon owners fill me in on the 6spd transmission.....Nick

x2. I run 4.56's in mine with 35" rubbers. Great ratio for hwy driving.

I was thinking of 37s down the road and i herd that 4.56s are the weak link in the diff over 4.10 and 4.88?????? Nick

Here is some information to help out with the decision.
Gear NSG370 AX-15
1 5.01:1 3.83:1
2 2.83:1 2.33:1
3 1.78:1 1.44:1
4 1.25:1 1.0:1
5 1.0:1 .79:1
6 .82:1
If you plan to go 37's 4.88's would be good. I'm running 35's with 4.88's and it's a little slow going on the road. But I didn't build it for the road! Your best bet "Buy a tow rig!":flipoff2:

4.88s will be weaker than 4.56s, but I'd go 4.88s.

Josh,
Can you describe how a little slow is, so i know???? Like RPM to what gear your in = MPH.......... Because for me 2200rpm in 5th i'm doing 100kmh... Nick

NSG doesnt do much besides give you a lower 1st gear, i would go with an NV3550 its rated @ higher HP and torque and it has a removeable bellhousing allowing for a v-8 swap down the road.
the NSG just makes it somewhat of a close ratio trans, and the 4.0l being what it is, seems to like to be short shifted to allow for it to pull through the torque where as the NSG you have to constantly shift or run the RPMs up.
all in all i would go 4.56 for 35" tires because it sounds like this will still be daily driven.
i wouldnt gear for off road if you dont use your vehicle for more than 50% of its time in technical situations.

2405rpm in 5th I'm doing 105kmh.

I would go six speed and keep the 4.10's. For towing, more gears to choose from would be sweet.

I like the 6 speed trany lots of pull in 1st and 2200 at 60mph in 6th with the stock 245/75/16 tires & 4.10 gears. Have a set of 305/70/16 but don't have them on yet.
