Puller since its apart throw in one piece axles. I am assuming you removed the nut a key.

Puller. I had to purchase one that you hit with a BFH. The hub is keyed on a tapered shaft. Common problems with AMC20's are that the hub spin welds to the shaft. Then it's time for the cutting torch...

Good Luck.

do you have to remove the key first to pull the hub off i had this thing in a press and everything. What would you do with the cutting torch just heat it up then try to pull it off. where did you get your puller. The correct way for removing everything on the axle is the hub then the backing plate and then the bearing right?

I used a 3 jaw puller and a rose bud head on the oxy acetylene torch and BFH to get mine apart. majot PITA, i finally got a little smarter and put in 1 piece shafts.

yes, the backing plate holds the bearing into the housing.

It was about ten years ago when I took everything apart, I had to purchase the hub puller from a local tool store. It's an Old Forge Universal Hub Puller part 2519. I Googled for about 30 minutes and couldn't find it, but here's a similar KD puller on an eBay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/KD-Heavy-Duty-Universal-Wheel-Hub-Puller-2251_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43996QQihZ013QQite mZ230074637170QQrdZ1 IIRC, it was around $70-80 back then. Briefly checking online prices for the KD, the eBay auction is a pretty decent deal.

The axle was still on the Jeep when I pulled the hubs so I could work 'against the drivetrain' while doing this. Loosen the big nut, leave it on the last couple threads (so the puller and hub doesn't end up on your toe). Snug the screw up and whack it with a BFH. You can't get at the Woodruff key until you remove the hub. Not that you'll need to remove it, because....

When you have the hub off, pull off the backing plate, and toss the axle away. Replace with aftermarket one piece units. Yeah, you can still get the two piece ones...But why would you want to? They are really junk and one of the three weak areas of the CJ AMC20. The other two are the thin axle tubes that have a tendancy to turn in the housing, and the tin can rear housing cover. Make your decision right now if you want to go with the stock drum brakes or upgrade to discs. I rebuilt my stock 11" drums. By the time I had bought all new parts for the drums, I'd was within a couple hundred dollars of having brand new discs.
