Ok folks, I need your help here. I need more power. And since my motor is smoking a bit, I think its time for a rebuild. And since "Ill be in there anyway" Im going to massage it a bit. Thats where I need your help. I dont have a clue where to go with this.

So, what are some common hopups that can be done to a Magnum 5.9 motor? Im not looking for insane HP/TQ, just more than stock while still staying reliable.

Cheap is good to.

I was thinking:
M1 intake
heads/head work
cam(?)(what grind)
boring the pistons? (how far)
new crank(?) (which one)

So you Mopar motorheads, help me out.

computer programming/replacement is definatly on the books to be done. I just figured 'since I was going to be in there' Id go ahead and build for a bit more power.

And its looking like a 408 stroker build is out for the foreseable future. Too much $$ right now. Everyreport Ive read about the 408 build was big bucks. Like $6000 and up. I was hoping to do something more in the $500-1000 range. This has got to be done on a shoestring budget since Ive got a wedding comming up soon that Im going to be paying for.

You have been reading the racer 408 builds. The cost of a truck 408 build is only $600 to 800 more than a stock 5.9L re-build. The $300.00 Eagle 4" stroke crank is fine for a non racing apps.

Oh? Cool then. That brings it down to feasible then. I know Im acting like a newbie here, but could you point me towards the 'normal' 408 builds?

i imagine if you went balls out you could easily get 6k in a 408. but for a few extra bucks, over a 360, you could have a very strong motor.

Hey man, lots of buildup info here as well from the Dakota R/T crew...

http://forums.delphiforums.com/dakotart/start

There are guys at all levels of go fast on 5.9s. I had my R/T running low 13s at over 110mph n/a. Yes, I am a 5.9 gear head.

IMO, great things can be had for cheap out of the M1, larger TB and headers/exhaust combo. If you get into cams, then worry about the head flow. Not worth it IMO before then. I have great sources for vendors if you need as well...just hit me up.

6K would be cheap. Seen 14K 408s....that is balls out IMO. 6K will get you a nicely build 360 with a decent bottom end though.

heck, here:

http://www.socaldakota.com/ he sells more parts for the 5.9 than most guys I know. Might be tought though because some of the parts can be fairly Dakota/Durango specific....and specific to 2wd models. (Durango R/T is 4x4 only). If you want a cam, he can get custom grinds done no problem. Tell him what you are doing, what vehicle etc...he will recommend the right thing for you, no problems.

I also have a great guy up in Seattle area who runs the parts counter for a Dodge dealer there. Wouldn't call on anyone else ever to get me the parts I need for these engines. Knows them backward and forward. Email me for more info there.

http://www.thefastman.com/index.asp THE source for drop in 5.9s and 6.7s (408s) This guy is awesome, will take the time to answer any questions you have, even if you don't buy from him. Just make sure you have plenty of long distance minutes...he likes to talk! If you see customer quotes from a guy named Scott, it is the same Scott who runs gsmotorsports.com He has some stuff too, but very Dakota/Durango specific....

http://www.shadydellspeedshop.com/ if you are planning on getting heads ported polished etc, I wouldn't trust anyone else in the industry but Ryan. This guy knows Dodge heads like a porn star knows giving head. Only bad part, might take a month or three to get them done...very VERY busy.
