I have a 73 Ranchero. Took out the whole axle to rebuild arms and change center section with new 9 inch. Got a nine on Ebay and it does not fit the housing. Is there more than one type of nine inch chunk or is something else a mystery.
Thanks Al

You may have an 8 inch housing instead. Take some pics.

if it is a 9" the ring gear section of the rear axle housing protrudes out, An 8" has a smooth housing with a dimple on each side of the housing

it could be a 9.5" or 9.75"..
i had a 9" housing & tried to put the 3rd member in & it wouldnt fit.
after some research i discovered the other 2 sizes.
they will fit but you need to make 2 notches on the housing.
rotate the 3rd @ about a 45 degree angle & thats where u need to notch.
mine was a 9.5" carrier so i ground 1/4" off on each side. its a pain to get in but it does go.
the guy i got it from said it was all from the same rig!! not a chance.
hope this info helps. i might have pics somewhere if u need em but it is obvious what needs to be done.
the axles & everything else will fit the same as a 9" carrier.

Do U have any more info on this, without researching what are these other diffs from?

seems like it was from a truck. but its been over 3 years since i did my axle swap.
i found nothing when i just searched. all it popped up with is the 9.75" sterling axle info.
the info is out there & ill look some more.
