: what backspacing???
slider 05-14-2002, 07:04 AM OK...I need a simple, quick answer, because 4 wheel parts has free shipping, even on thier tire packages until May 17th...
Unless someone here knows where I can get these any cheaper?? (I'm all ears)
I'll be running stock axles, TT YJ SPOA conversion and those front Ford shock mounts. 4.29 R&P's, and a GRS 1....
Yea, yea...whatever, right...old news, right?
But I really need to know what B/S I should have for those cheap Rockcrawler Steelies.
I'm planning on the BFG's M/T 32x11.5x15's.
TT says to get a 3.75" B/S
...is this too much to stuff front or rear?...Oh is there barely and stuffing when going YJ's to matter?
What if in 2 years I go to the 33x12.5 on the same steelies...will 3.75" still be enough B/S???
Should I go to 4" B/S right from the start?
Rocky Road 05-14-2002, 07:23 AM That's some messed up information you're getting there.
DO NOT go over 3.5" on your backspcing. The tires would hit a stock spring as it is. The YJ springs are wider. Pull the tires in any closer and you'll be hitting at the slightest turn.
Ideally, you want to have 2-2.5" backspacing. 2" is what most folks are going with.
Anything more than 2.5" and you'll be chewing your new tires up on your springs.
The larger the backspacing, the closer in your tires get. The less the backspacing, the further out they are pushed.
Shrock 05-14-2002, 07:28 AM Yeah, go with the 2". I will give you a wider stance for more stabilty too.
slider 05-14-2002, 07:29 AM thanks...
had it backwards I guess...
And that's why us sad, undereducated lurk here!!!
Future:
@ 33x12.5" tires ...would that be OK with 2"B/S
or should we be at 1.5" at that point?
Rocky Road 05-14-2002, 07:49 AM Its really tough to go less than 2" on backspacing as the center section of the wheel starts to go outside the smaller 'middle part' of the wheel outer. You'll find that most every wheel shop will stop at a 2" BS anyway.
Stay with 2" and you'll be fine for 33" tires. If you want to go wider some day, you can add in some wheel spacers. I wouldn't recommend it on stock axles though as it'll put a lot of leverage out there and could lead to banana'd axle housings if you like to drive fast offroad.
dangerber 05-14-2002, 08:50 AM I have a set of 15x10 2" BS black rockcrawlers for sale if you are interested, contact me off the board if you like...:D
slider 05-14-2002, 11:36 AM So, I've checked ... the 2 most affordable brands:
the least amount of BS available on RockCrawler 15x8 rims is 3.75"
On the Eagle 589 alloys the least is 3.25
Where are you guys finding 2" backspaced rims for cheap?
Slider ---the confused guy!!
dangerber 05-14-2002, 11:59 AM The 2" BS is considered "custom" so they aren't as cheep as the normal cheep steelies. :D
schuss 05-14-2002, 12:23 PM its about 10 bucks more per wheel for custom backspace on US wheels, which is what the rockcrawler ones are, I believe.

I'm confused too. I spent countless hours searching the web and on the phone with various local wheel shops as well as off road suppliers and the most common aggressive BS is 3.75 on most wheels.
One rather large local shop ( after contacting their contacts) found 2 wheels with smaller BS.
Its the Eagle 589 (as mentioned above) and
American Racing reverse Smoothie.
I did not want the smoothie, so I ordered the alloy 589's.
If someone can point out a SPECIFIC wheel that has 2.5 inch BS, without special order ( that actually involves calling the manufacturer and getting their engineer to re-set the production line, which = $$$$ which is :rainbow: ) I'd be glad to see it. :nuke: :
Rockrat 05-14-2002, 04:32 PM I got mine through 4wheelparts wholesale 15x8 2" backspace $48.00 a wheel but it took 1-1/2 months to get seems they couldnt find them in there stock and the company that makes them, there machine was broke

find any supplier of US wheels, they do custom backspacing. It'll be about the same price, if not less.
slider 05-14-2002, 07:41 PM rockrat...
which do you have:
the 589 eagle alloys?
or
those black steelies (rockcrawler or US wheel)?
slider 05-14-2002, 07:47 PM now... I'm thinking of going with the 3.25" BS eagle alloys 15x8 and see how they work, and if I want a little less in the future with a wider tire, say 12.5, I can add 1" wheel spacers all around and end up with 2.25" B/S??!!
gfwhitworth 05-14-2002, 08:38 PM I still have the stock sammi springs all around, and I ran the 15x8 Eagle Alloy 589's for a while, they have 3 1/4" Back Spacing, with 32x11.50x15 Goodyear MTR's. Never ever had the tires come in contact with the springs.
I just ordered my 15x10 Eagle Alloy 589's, they have 3 5/8" Back Spacing. I am switching because I wanted some extra width, and I had a buyer for the 15x8's.

I have the Black steel 15x8 w/2"B.S 33x12.5 swamper's. I Had plenty of clearence up front untill I did the S/R with the YJ springs now I clip the lugs at full turn both ways, hoping that will go away once I get the Toy axles under it, I prefer the steel over the alum, so as not to get so pissed when I fuck one up no what I mean, blow a beed in the rocks on an aluminum you might be buyin a new spare wheel instead of just hittin it with air. my o2

Go here. (http://www.gresham.k12.or.us/students/Rvogl/explorer1.html) I have bought two sets of rims from Willamette, bought the 3rd from a local place and got the wrong backspacing. I got one set from Willamette in about a week, the other took closer to 3 weeks so plan accordingly.
There is a shop in The Woodlands, TX called Bush Hog Racing. I ordered my rims from them on a Friday and they were in on the next Tuesday. Look 'em up. I don't have their phone number handy but they can get you Bart steelies for 37 bucks each, no matter what backspacing you want. If you want beadlocks they can do that as well.
