: Smooth Dana 60 or 70?

I came upon a dually cube van in the boneyard, the diff cover looked just like a Dana 60 or 70 cover, but the underside of the diff looked real smooth, none of the usual nubs and flanges hanging down that I usually see. I couldn't get close enough to get any numbers off of it. Does anyone know what mod this is, or anything else about it?

It was NOT a sterling!

It was a D70HD They usually came in the dually variety and are VERY smooth all the way around. I do believe that they are 74" wide too.

Actually to my knowledge it shouldn't be a 70HD
From what I've found the regular 70 is ribbed, & 70HD is heavily ribbed. The 70U is the one that's smooth on the bottom. That's what mine is anyway, & it has not a rib to be found.
Could this be something that someone just slapped duals on? I always thought all the 70s that were intended to be in a dually were 70HDs. I know my 70U came out of a 86 F350 single wheel with a 6.9 diesel.

I do believe that parts availability for the U is less than the standard 70

Most likely a 70U. My BOM indicates mine came from an '83 F-350 even though I procured it from an '80 F-350. I was able to get a Detroit and 4.88's from West Coast Differential no problem however axle shafts are not avail new from Spicer anymore. Will have to go aftermarket "if" I ever break one.

I'm guessing here but IIRC it's about 1/4 to 3/8"? in the center section and quite a bit thicker at the tube insertion.

Its a 70. Pull the BOm to see if its a U or HD
