Same here I'm getting bored of the dunes. Have you talked to any of the lost coast 4x4 guys? I hear there are some old logging roads up near orick that arent gated off. Pretty sure its green diamond property though. If you hear of anything let me know I'm just now getting into 4x4's.

Go up 299 from 101. When it first turns into the 4 lane road with the first snow sign warnings, make your first right. Follow that all the way and plenty of trails.
I lived up there about oh man 10 years ago. You could drive on the beach to the mouth of the Mad River. Good times especially with the great whites comming in to get the seals feading on salmon.

Prairy River (think that is what it is called) or about 10 miles north of Crescent City, a few trails to the ocean. Most places are OK or on LP roads. Jsut don't play the fool and stay on the trails. Be cool if someone stops you. They are looking for idiots or those with stashes growing around.

Is Moreno's still there or did they not rebuild after the 96 quake?

Same here im sick of dunes, i hear the bald hills north of orick have some good trails, my dad used to drive across the river at the base of the ruth lake and i guess there was about 200 acres out there of four wheelin, gonna go check that out too. Im pretty sure marino's didnt rebuild ill check it out though...
thanks

I used to live up there about 12 years ago, we used to go out to the Eel river, go over fernbridge make the first left and head back towards the river. When you get to the river go north and there was mud pits and all kinds of trouble to be had. Also used to go up 299 to lord ellis pass hang a right on five mile road till it dead ended into the road up to snow camp. Three front axles and 2 busted trannies from up in there, but it was a good time. Tim

I ran the snow camp trail this sunday. I would definitely recommend it for any of the local wheelers, watch out for the water holes, theres one around 3.5 ft deep! Any other trails??

Its a bit of a drive from Humbolt (2.5-3 hrs.) but google the Mcgrew Trail. A few clubs from Oregon have planned runs there. I have yet to go but hear from others that it is pretty fun.

it does look like fun, might plan a run up there on spring break or later in the summer. Where do you wheel up in Crescent City?

There are literally hundreds of miles of logging roads and trails about 15 minutes from town. French Hill in Gasquet and Low Divide Rd. are two right ff the top of my nugget. Mostly logging roads but there are places to pull off and wheel.

French Hill:

Hope not. It's my friends father-in-law. He teaches I think. That thing is badass. my friend Tim has his old ride. CJ5 with a chevy vortec V6 detroits front and rear and twin sticked.

That wrangler is fully built and damn near unstoppable.

Have you tried going up to Horse Mt. and just keep on going? If you get way out, there is some wheelin'. I feel for you Man. I lived over there for about 7 years during and after college and although I miss it tremendously, its not because of the wheelin. I honestly had more fun wheelin my 4runner when it just had 31s and a locker, before the SAS and the rest. There just isn't any chanllenging wheelin that I could find easily (or legally). Have you tried surfing, whitewater rafting, fishing, mountain biking...? I had to resort to other (lesser) hobbies when I was there. Good luck. Oh, and when you find the good stuff, post up! I'll make a trip down the 96 and come wheel with ya. :smokin:

smurison14 how far out snowcamp rd did you go? I went out to snowcamp lastweekend and started driving on the powerline roads which should have took me all the way to southfork mountain rd but it was gated off at the bottom of the hill. Thinking about going out to either devils backbone or grouse mnt lookout next weekend if anyones interested. Assuming I can figure out where my damn fuel leak is coming from.

Yes that is the road. I am going to guess it was about 30 miles or so. You can take Mattole Rd from Honeydew, CA.

sorry, completely forgot about this thread! I recently went up to snow camp road and was very disappointed. I would only recommend it during the winter/spring moths as the scenery is breathtaking and the snow is really deep. Titties Rig, I usually went past the lake and there is a gate that is closed about 6 miles after the lake. I may also try Friday Ridge Road, look it up on Google earth, it goes from Titlow Hill to Kneeland.

Cool, was it crowded at all, or like Usal? Looking at the map it looked like it might be possible to get to Shelter cove via that road, but didn't know and have always been by myself and didn't want to see where it went, given how secluded the area is.

smurison14 yeah I can see snowcamp being alot more fun in the winter.
I've been out to friday ridge rd but didnt go real far. Just screwed around at that first turn off down to the river from 299.
To get to grouse mnt go to titlow hill rd and follow the rt 36 juction signs untill you get to buck flat. There is going to be forrest service rt 5n01 on your left and then rt 5n18 to spike back mnt that may be gated off. Stick to your left at the next fork and then take the next right. You'll pass the foundation of the lookout on your left and keep driving till the road seems to dead end into a quad trail and thats the trail.

Blanket Creek is part of 7,279.20 acres we lost to the 2006 New Wilderness Act at MT Lassic in Six River National Forest. As everyone knows we are losing more area that we love to 4x4 in. The rangers just have not closed the Blanket Creek trail down yet.http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sixrivers/recreation/siskiyou/wilderness/mtlassic_20050607.pdf

I've camped on the Van Duzen before. Actually a few times over the last few years. A guy at my work grew up there.

I spent the first half of my childhood (untell I was like 12) on Kneeland. My wife has never been over there to see and understand how awesome it really is. She grew up in Santa Cruz and thinks that she understands the Redwoods. Let me know if you guys have a trip that makes a loop. Since all I have is the buggy right now, I can't do any road traveling. I would love to spend a weekend up there wheeling and take her with me. What a great way to introduce her to the area that I grew up in. And it is only a few hours from me, same a Moon Rocks and closer than the Con. And I just love getting out and hitting the trails, whether they are super harcore or just dirt roads, it's all fun.

smurison14
07-22-2007, 12:56 PM
It is hard to beat the scenery out here. It makes wheelin even more special. The diversity of this area is also spectacular, you can drive on the beach, then drive 20 miles inland and wheel up in the snow and the enormous forests, then drive half an hour inland and wheel on granite slabs.

I posted a link on page one of this thread. I don't think it will be much of a challenge in the summer. After a good rain there are a few good mud spots.

I was actually thinking about doing that run again this weekend and checking out Shelter Cove this time.
