I need to buy new coils too. Either 4 or 6 inch springs for the FJ 80. The truck drives super smooth, better than it did stock and alot better than with the spacer lift. Ill have more pics of it in a month or so because the truck is at home and Im at school.

I only call it a SAC because whenever Im talking to someone I always said solid axle conversion instead of swap. People that dont know much about the subject thought I was just swaping solid axles instead of converting from IFS to solid. Most of the time now I just call it straight axled.

I still need to finish a bunch of stuff but it rides great. One of the upper links needs to be moved, finish welding the exhaust up, make actual shock tabs on the links, buy bigger coils, and definetly swap the leaf springs. That pic was taken with the front end and trans/tcase in the bed though. I was suprised that the coils compressed to almost half the expanded height. Ill be getting some 6 inch lift coils to go in it once I get it back on the road.

Everyone says that. I had to get the truck out of the shop before I could paint it and now its just sitting at my house while I finish up school. Its been to cold to paint it. It will come right off with the wire brush so Im not worried about it.

Ive listened. Its what I had at the time and Im still not sure if the setup is going to work the way I want it. Once I drive the thing and make sure it handles Im going to sleeve the lowers. When doing my links I was goign to go with 1 3/4 x.250 and was told plenty of times that it was in stock. When it came down to buying it they didnt have it and noone in the area carried it. I only had 2 days to get it done so I had to use what I had.

Buy some 2" .250 and stick what you have in there, then you should be good

Thats what I plan on doing. Im also going to box in the link mounts and probably brace them so they never move, that is once I get to test it out. If I cant find a way to get around the interference problems Im going to have to come up with new lowers anyways.

Havent updated this in awhile.

Truck drives and wheels great. Made a 700+ mile wheeling trip to Rausch Creek in July and rode smooth and straight the whole way. I get no bump steer either. Overall Im happy except that the truck leans about an 1 or 2 lower on the drivers side.

A couple of poser shots.

The tie rod is now 1.25" DOM sleeved with 1" solid. Everything has held up great except for the front diff cover which has a few nice dents in it. Wont be wheeling until springtime anyways so it gives me time to get some diff protection.

Well after 3 years of beating it havent had much of a problem. Was looking to go bigger with the rubber but the fronts stuff into the inner fenders as it is. I guess I could make longer bump stops but tire size hasnt held me back to much. Deciding on building the FJ40 I have or part it out and tube bed , 4 link the rear, and do a full exo on the Tacoma. Thankfully the frame is still holding up and isnt rotted.

It looks like your upper links run parallel and the lowers are triangulated? Do you know the degree of triangulation in the lowers? Also, where's the tie rod? Running behind the axle? I've always like your truck for it's sort of sleeper look. What would you anticipate having to modify in order to move up to 37's or 40's, if you were so inclined?

thepinktaco
08-19-2009, 01:46 PM
Tie rod is behind the axle, both links are triangulated. No clue on the angle, just put them where they fit.

Right now the 35s just rub the upper inner fender, right where the battery is. Im actually going to be looking at a set of 37s so well see what has to be done. I think I might have to go up a few inches just to make sure they will clear while keeping the same up travel.

OME J-coils for a FZJ80 front lift. If I did it again I would make the mounts lower to use the springs I already had. When I dopped the truck on the spring it went alto lower than I thought it would. It was about at stock height after the SAS.

How much clearance do you have between the tie rod and lower links with the truck sitting level and wheels straight? I will be fitting my lowers in the next week or so.

One other question, how much did the factory coils compress when you put the weight of the truck on them?

Thanks

thepinktaco

Id have to check tomorrow how much there is at ride height but Id say 1.5" They rub alittle because you can see marks where they rub. My tie rod is also tweaked all the way around because it sits so low in the back it gets hit all the time.

I dont remember how much they compressed but I remember its alot more than I thought they would. I have OME J springs in it, which are about a 6" lift spring.

Got the york compressor mounted, took out the factory a/c since it wasnt working so well and I have the half doors on when its nice out. Wired the compressor to the factory wiring. Push the a/c button and the compressor kicks on.

This is what the bracket for the factory a/c was like. Only problem is it tilted the compressor down to close to the frame
http://i43.photobucket.com/albums/e356/cpsavinski/Truck/Picture013-1.jpg

Solution, cut off the extra so the compressor sits parallel with the engine.

Fills my 35s from 10 to 30 in a min at idle. Im going to plumb in my sliders as tanks. Should give me about 5 gallons to aid in helping air up.

Only problem Im having is the drain in the filter im using keeps blowing out oil through the drain after using it for awhile. Its just a cheap filter so Im probably just going to upgrade. Although when I use it its dark out so it might be filling with too much oil. Havent had time to test it in the day time.

Been awhile...

Broke the front crossmember off again, probably due to the winch. Fully boxed the front section of frame and replaced the 1/8 crossmember with 1/4 and recessed it into the frame instead of inbetween

Getting ready to swap in a FF FJ80 rear with an Auzzie locker. Going to run 14" bilsteins and go through the bed to get the most out of the rear. Still trying to figure out how Im going to make the upper shock mount/tower. Probably going to make a tower on each frame rail with 2x2 and brace the two sides together.

Continued reassembling the axle tonight. Got the rotors on, ebrake adjusted, calipers on, drilled the flange for Tacoma pattern and tried putting the diff in. It would go almost all the way in, about a 1/4 in. above the axle, and wouldnt go in further. It looks like its hitting the inside of the axle on the bearing caps. Hopefully finishing everything up on Saturday so I can start on the rear shock mounts.

Finished up the axle swap yesterday and took it out wheeling today. Everything went well and even having the offset diff wasnt a problem on the road, took it up to 60+ and no vibrations.

Waiting on Hellfires high steer knuckles to finish off the drivetrain hopefully for a while.

3RZ, turbo trans, 4.7 23 spline case, and FJ80 axles front and rear is about the most factory parts built drive train you can get, aside from the 4.7s.

took it for a long ride last night, got up to 70 on the highway and no vibrations. The only thing with these axles is that the ebrake cable hangs so low. I got it working pretty good right now. I also have 1in wheel spacers on the rear to fit the 15s.

Wow that does hang down. I figured the 80 axle would look wider. Are those a heavy offset rim or something?

15x8 3.75 backspacing plus the 1 inch spacer.

The axles are only 3.5 inches wider than the tacoma axle.

I know its been awhile but the rear has been working without problems. I dented the drive shaft last time out wheeling and there still wasnt a vibration.

Got to installing the hellfire fabs FJ80 knuckles. Ran into some clearance problems with the drag link and tie rod though. Thinking on running a flat pitman arm and notch the frame or move the box forward.

Thepinktaco, do you know about how much the ome J springs compressed after putting the weight of the vehicle on them? Any help would be appreciated. Anyways, very nice build:smokin:

are you running the 15" wheels still? if so on the front were you able to get away without a spacer?

About 21.5" with no weight, 17" at ride height. Might have been different when I first put them in, been wheeled hard for a few years.
