Stupid frnch jackasS 05-14-2002, 01:56 PM Hi,
I'm back from the TOY4x4 meeting this weekend, and though my BJ40 performed well during the first 2 days, one of my 27yr-old birfield went south on friday night. Now I need some replacement, and was advised by a local toyoter that USED birf. were sold @ $200 here in France !
So here are the questions :
My BJ40 1975 has drums (discs only came in 1981 in Europe I think) and I think I have coarse spline birfields ( I bet those 6 spline couldn't be a lot coarser anyway).
1) Searched the archive for a while, and dicovered I can't use longfields whith my knuckles, right ?
2)If so, what can I use then ?
3) And where can I find some new biefields at a reasonable price ?
4) Could I swap knuckles from an coiled 70-series axle (I think they are pretty much the same as the minis)... Anybody ?
Btw, here are my birf. dimensions :
inner shaft : 30mm (1.18") OD ; 27 spline
birf. OD : 91mm (3.58") ; 85mm (3.35") between flats
outer shaft : 28.3mm (1.11") dia ; 6 squarish spline
Thanks !
Denis

cruiserman 05-14-2002, 03:05 PM If Cruiser parts are more plentiful, then simply do a TLC disc brake conversion using disc birfields, knuckles, hubs, etc. You will probably need to grind a little on the inner surface of the lower axle housing surface due to birfield interference a la hilux conversion.
Don't forget about your master cylinder if you swap to discs.
Toytank 05-14-2002, 03:23 PM Make sure you get some Longfields when you do the conversion then you will be done with it.

BJ On Roids 05-14-2002, 03:45 PM the vehicle in the picture, you could use the knuckle and birfield off if, pretty easily, make sure you swap your own hub back on as the coiled ones are 5 stud :barf: and you'd need new rims
likely if it lasted 27 years and was the coarse spline type you don't really need longfields, unless you intend going a bit harder with it thatn the previous owners did
just watch the axle lengths on the car you take them from, i think the coiled fronts are a little wider
Stupid frnch jackasS 05-15-2002, 12:41 PM Are all the knuckles intechangable between cruisers, hiluxes, minis... ?
Do all "newer" knuckles work with the same size birfs ? (namely LJ70, BJ73...)
One more Q : can I keep my inner shaft, or would I need a new one ? In which case I could only get one from a 40, since the other are longer on the longer side (including Light Duty 70-series ?)
(BJonR,
The pic is not a possible donor, but a HZJ78 that got stuck numerous times this weekend. The reinforced rear spring packs are so think and hang so damn low they got stuck on the center of the muddy track... I just thought a little pic in the end of my post would make it look good... )
TIA,
Denis

Stupid frnch jackasS 05-15-2002, 09:41 PM Forgot to mention : I'm not doing that hardcore rockrunning nor am I driving like a fool, but I'm doing some tough stuff though, and since Longfield would still cost less, delivered, than used stock birfs. sourced here, I'd go for the if I can source knuckles and hubs without birfs. for pretty cheap.
Bye,

I've got a set of coarse spline Birfields from my '71 FJ40, in very good shape. I did a Toyota mini-truck disc brake conversion late last year so don't need them any more. You can have them for the cost of shipping. I'm in the western US, in New Mexico.

Stupid frnch jackasS 05-16-2002, 08:30 AM Jeff,
I don't have a rollbar... yet, and usually drive with the H/T on.
But this time there was nothing terrific as for sideslopes, and I didn't even go there there would have been only the slightest chance of rollover. I'm not a nut, I don't want to get killed, and I don't want to hurt my car either. It was almost all about mud, and the only slopes I climbed on were nearly level in the transversal line. Anyway, a rollbar is #2 on the list, just after a birfield...
Bye,
Denis
