I am about to sell my truck (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?t=531259)
to someone I have never met; since this is the place where seller's and buyer's come with their beef, I have two questions:
1. What would you do different for your next purchase/sale?
2. What are some of the common pitfalls you have seen others encounter?
My main concern is paperwork & payment.
Thanx.

Hey, the vast majority of stuff I buy and sell is to/from people I don't know!
If you own that rig free and clear and have a title in hand, it's cake to do the transaction. It only gets more complicated if there is a lien associated with it - doing that requires one of a few things:
1) A trusting buyer.
2) A trusting seller.
3) Actually being at the bank where the lien is held.
4) Some advance paperwork ensuring that the bank will send the new buyer the title and that the seller is completely taken out of the transaction. The lien is paid to the bank directly and the rest of the funds to the seller.
For a simple purchase do the following:
1) Send lots of pictures, answer all the questions honestly. If you think there *might* be an issue, disclose it... Different people have different perceptions of what "good" condition is, so don't leave room for debate in your descriptions.
2) When accepting money for a vehicle, either take CASH - or certified funds. When accepting certified funds, ask the seller for the check number and the bank it's drawn on. It's a joke to forge a certified check these days and even your bank won't know the difference. As such and this is very important: Call the issuing bank to verify that particular check number. Do this in advance, as most banks close off hours.
If people would do this, it would drastically reduce the amount of fraud that's going on.
3) Have all sales paperwork filled out in advance. Make sure you sign what you need to sign on the title and have the sales paperwork for the state that the vehicle will be registered in ready and completely filled out. Check it twice.
1)There should be no problem as long as the title is clear and you have the pinkslip.
2)Best to get cash.If they want to give you a check,go to a branch of their bank with the person and cash it on the spot.
3)It is best to have the vehicle pre-smogged if applicable, makes transaction go smoother.
4)If you dont want a stranger(s)at your house meet at a publc area and bring a buddy along. Also have one if you deal at your house...carjacking.
5)Are you going to let the buyer test drive? Some people allow it and some dont because of liability reasons. The call is yours.
