: Having trouble finding an aftermarket shifter

I really need to change my shifter on the Disco Auto from the original one for mainly the following reasons:

1. Reverse pattern (P-R-N-1-2-3-4 instead of P-R-N-4-3-2-1)
2. Ease/quickess of shifting
3. The obvious COOL facotr which my truck needs with its "beauty"...

So I checked online with most manufacturers and no one has a unit specifically for the ZF 4 speed...after calling them, most recommend that I take the TH700/400 reverse shifters they have and tinker with them until they fit correctly...although I am not shaving that option away, I wanted to know what you guys can (constructively) contribute???

thx

I don't think it can be done. It seems changes to the valve body would have to be made. It would be nice, but I think it is not a cost effective idea.

Others have wished for a torque convertor lockup switch as well. And given up the idea with this transmission.

Their area few aftermarket obscure shifters for BMW's that work as BMW's had the ZF4hp22 in a few models for quite some time. But Its very hard to find anything for them. So I built my own shifters.

K.C., can you post up some pics/specs...I was thinking of doing the same as well...was it hard?

I recently converted a 110 to auto using a ZF box but didn't want to use a factory shifter.
I used an ArtCarr shifter and modified the shift gate. It's about 14 gauge steel and rolled to fit the housing. You have to cut and weld on the gate to make it match the detents of the trans. It's not fast but it is doable.
Call Art Carr and talk to one of their techs; he was helpful to me.

Thx Mike,

I called Art Carr, and the Tech that was helping me was "err...nope, we don't do that..." attitude...so no beef from him...

Can you post up some pics please? Also, what part numbe was it?

Thanks in advance

Im sure I have lost all my pics, and since I no longer have my D-90, I cant retake. I have built 5 Plus of my shifters for other D-90's that were converted to auto. Basically they look stock from the cab, but they have a bit more going on underneath. You first start out with a generic floor shifter like the MR Gasket 4speed floor shifter. It does not have any detents except for park and neautral I think. You can make all the detents you want though. Then you have to make a few brackets, and some heim linkages. Then rebuild or extend the linkage on the tranny. I personally used the detents built into the tranny. Anyway, Doug Marbourg or damn, cant think of the others, but someone surely has pics.

Shure a shifter can be created easy enough. But what Dino is trying to do is reverse the D321 to 123D. And this is no easy task. I do not think KC is talking about anything more then making the shifter work with the transmission in its stock control.

Was thinking about something like that...where it is free flowing from "1" to "R" via "N"...But I'm kinda skeptical that it'll work given that I don't have truck with me in Cleveland....

I'll try to get some photos this weekend. I'll also get a P/N and I may have the techs name that I spoke to.

Listen to Pendy. To accomplish what you're asking, you'll need a different valve-body for the transmission. The transmission could care less what the shifter looks like or it's orientation. The shifter's orientation has zero bearing on sticking 1st, N, and Reverse next to each other. You need to find somebody that does custom valve-body modifications and you'll likely end up with something completely manual (no automatic shifting).

But the shift patern is still N D 3 2 1 isn't it?
If not then I would imagine you could swap the valve body.

But I believe it's still ND321

1. Reverse pattern (P-R-N-1-2-3-4 instead of P-R-N-4-3-2-1)

Shouldn't there be a "D" in there somewhere??

I would think D would be 4th gear or overdrive.

If, when it was all said and done, you still had automatic function in the transmission...
