Fawkin' D44 rear pinion oil seal is leaking again. This is the 5th one in 10 months

A local 4x shop built the d44 and it is still under warranty. So they've replaced the seal 5 times for free....but it is a real PITA since this is my daily driver and I'm like a high school boy bumming rides of friends again.

THe shop sez it is poor quality control from the seal manufacturer, but I think they're full of s--t and don't want to admit to something more grave being wrong. WTF? What are some of the reasons seals don't last?

You run in alot of mud? That'll kill seals early. So will using a pressure washer on a regular basis.Bad bearing?Does it make alot of noise? My 2 cents.

are they using the same yoke?
worn yokes can kill a seal fast.

Yep, check the pinion yoke for scoring.

Why don't YOU stick around and watch this time? It's your Jeep and they aren't doing it right, so take a look and see what's going on. I'd bet on the yoke as the problem too.

Are they using the same pinion nut each time they assemble it back? If they are that could be why its leaking, the pinion nut is supposed to used one time and then discarded, it could be loosening up and that could be your problem.

No mud and no pressure washers. The yoke and nut have been replaced since I went from a d35 to d44. Haven't checked for a plugged vent tube.

Is it leaking around the yoke or between the seal and housing?

The pinion nut should be replaced everytime it is removed.

So, after some grief, the 4xshop replaced my yoke, seal and nut and they also rebalanced my driveshaft. THey also checked the housing for damage where the seal sits.

THey said I may be smashing the D44 on rocks or something.

I remember dragging the D35 on rocks without ever blowing oil seals on it! Shouldn't the d44 withstand it also? I doubt I'm the only one in jeepdom dragging my diff on rocks
