: FZJ80 and front CV driveshafts

I know that High Angle driveshafts is active on this board.... but...

anyone out there with a cv front driveshaft on their 80 series? I've heard some not-so-great things about Woods ... and I definitely need a front asap. I heard rumblings that an 87-95 mini front would bolt up and the cv joint is awesomely beefy, but it's too short.... can this be lengthened? Any thoughts on any driveshaft modifier out there with 80 series experience?

Thanks
Mike

Mike, talk to Jess at High Angle Driveline and explain to him what you need, even if he's never done anything for an FZJ80 he'll do you right. Worst case scenario you may have to send him your front driveshaft to use as a template.

He made driveshafts for a friend of mine for his SO FJ60 and they are like works of art, they've stood up to serious abuse and still look like they don't get wheeled.

Hey Mike,

I have an FJ80 front shaft kicking around (I'll sell it if you want a spare to modify)... it is a bit longer then the mini truck. A CV shaft could easily be installed on it, I just had a CV shaft built for the rear of my 4-runner. The shop cut the old upper U-joint and yokes off the rear shaft, cut the CV from the front shaft, then welded it on the rear. Total cost was $45, and they had the shaft for about a week.

The best CV comes from the 79 - 85 truck/4r, the 86 and up will work, but it runs at less of an angle at full droop than the earlier shaft. Some machining can be done to increase it's full working angle, but buying an early shaft will be cheaper for obvious reasons.

Just had some discussion on the 80 series list about using mini CV driveshafts on an 80. The bolt pattern is different on the transfer case side, but that's an easy fix. So, lengthen the mini driveshaft, and fill/drill the flange.

Just some further info on the CV's. The early, 79-83, Mini truck CV's should be avoided. They seem to have longevity issues when used at much angle. The later CV's last much better, and the ifs versions can be made to operate at the same angle as the solid axle variety. The flange on the transfer case will have to be redrilled to match the CV pattern, unless you get really lucky and find one of the oddball CV's that happens to match your bolt pattern.

For any more info give High Angle a call (Yes, I do work there:p )
