: Windshield hinges - Removal??
GloNDark 05-15-2002, 08:16 AM :mad3: First off, fawking a, those fawkers are on there.
Why in the hell would toyota use phillips head screws for this?? And how in the hell am I suposed to get them off? When I flopped the cruiser and broke the windshield, I broke the hinge pins and bent the hinges. I now have my new frame, new windshield (THANKS JASON and RUGBURN!!!) and I am in the process of finding some new hinges. I gotta get these fawkers off there.
HELP HELP!! :D
Mustard Dog 05-15-2002, 08:20 AM Soak the area for a couple days, then use a impact driver (the kind you smack with a hammer). Or just drill the heads, since you don't need the frame it doesn't matter if the screws stay in it. ;)
Junkyard 05-15-2002, 08:22 AM I used lots of penetrating lube to get the bolts out.
Interesting that yours are phillips-head screws. My bolts are countersunk flat-top allen-head bolts.
Jason M 05-15-2002, 08:23 AM pb blaster and an impact driver (hammer is best).
Autozone rents free tools if you do not have one..
Heat???
(orange flame, orange paint, no difference right??? :D )
cruiserbrett 05-15-2002, 08:23 AM I got one of those Craftsman impact driver for use with a hammer for that purpose...It was pretty cheap and has a big phillips bit, and after alot of penetrating oil soaking and even more beating on the end of the impact driver with a good size hammer they came out...
I found that any that stripped were pretty easy to drill out, as the taper is what is is preventing them from coming out. There is some sort of waxy/gluey sealer on the actual threads that kept mine form rusting...
FJ45Mike 05-15-2002, 08:27 AM I have an impact screw driver and I have taken several of them off. Give me a call and I will help ya or loan you my driver.

Cool thanks, My uncle has an impact driver. I picked it up last night for something else but never thought to try it on the phillips heads. SWEET!!
Check your post on birfields. I want em!! :D:D My uncle
FJ45Mike 05-15-2002, 08:45 AM Give me a call when you have time. I will be heading to Reno soon but I am off until Saturday.
GloNDark 05-15-2002, 08:46 AM Right on, how's tomorrow afternoon sound?? I get off at 4 and could cruise by afterwards. I work over off Roop now. :D
DCruiser138 05-15-2002, 08:48 AM i had that SAME PROBLEM! i had to drill the heads off all but like 2 of em. and then ez out the remnants, broke about 3 ez outs and theres still like 2 stuck in w/ no head on em!
im over it though!:rasta:
TLCObsession 05-15-2002, 12:11 PM Just did it for the 3rd time since I am slapping my rig back together for IRC (leaving tomorrow PM).
Easiest way is do drill the center of the phillips down to bright shiny steel with a 3/16" bit. Hits the top of the screw head with the grinder to flatten it out a bit and get some clean steel. Then take a 3/8 - 16 threaded nit (or something similar and mig a pplug into the screw and fill the threads of the nut.
After the huge heat soak the welding gives it, you can almost back them out by hand!
It took me about 12 minutes to do this on Sunday AM. I had to do all 8 on the frame that I was going to mount.
Cruiser Ken 05-15-2002, 12:29 PM I've had good luck using a really big phillips that has a hex pattern on the shaft just before the handle. You can put a wrench on that part of the screwdriver. Then you can apply a lot of down force to the screwdriver while turning it with the wrench.

Hmm I used some PB blaster with this technique on rusted screws both on my ws frame and ambulance doors and either got them out or broke the heads off. Never stripped any. Now if you are saying the bolt head was rusted off to begin with then, ya, it won't work.
DCruiser138 05-15-2002, 05:59 PM thats what i meant, all mine broke the heads off so i had to drill.:rasta:
FIXXXXAH 05-15-2002, 08:12 PM Dustin, dont you just hate that shit? everytime you go to take off a bolt or screw, you just go with a drill cause you know its just gonna be turn turn SNAP!:nuke:
Rust Sucks.
Matt
WheelingPiazza 05-16-2002, 04:37 AM The easiest way to get them off is weld a big bolt to the screw head and use your socket to get them off..
I had the same problem, I used an impact driver and they wouldnt not budge. Broke out the mig welder found three bolts a little smaller then the screw head, put two tacks on and unbolted.
I actually ended up using the same bolt on one side and three on the other side..
woody 05-16-2002, 06:18 AM Mine were all removed with a heat wrench...heh heh
While you have the hinges off, you might consider drilling out the pins and using some grade 5 bolts and cotter pins to replace them....allow you to pull 2 cotters and 2 bolts, disconnect the wiper wires, and viola, no windshield whatsoever. I've done this with mine, and when I'm gonna get silly it's nice to not worry about busting it up. (usually left at camp...hehe)
DCruiser138 05-16-2002, 07:33 AM when i had mine off, i had to heat press the pins out. in fact the only reason i took em off is cause the pins sheered. so i replaced em with some bolts and lok nutz. never thought of the qwik removal thang!:rasta:
GloNDark 05-16-2002, 08:23 AM Woody that is a hell of an idea!! I sure would hate to ruin that nice new plexi window I got when I get crazy at prison hill next time!! Thanks!!!
ckolloff 05-16-2002, 12:16 PM I have drivin truck & a really banged up parts truck so i did the woody trick on the windsheild and hood so I can swap on the banged up units b4 wheelin. Its not like my rig is real pretty or straight just that I drve it around town and don't want to twist/smash/bend anything that I will have to replace to avoid getting stopped or ticketed.
