: Auto Tranny Tech

We need some tech today.

I've been searching the net high and low for some info regarding swapping the gear set from a 999 auto into a 727. I think I heard somewhere that it can be done. The internals in both trannies are close, the 999 is lesser duty. Any thought to this?

If I have the tranny apart for a rebuild, and have the chance to swap in slightly lower gears, why not? I wouldn't do it to a running tranny.

IIRC the TF999 has a 1st gear ratio of 2.74:1 and the TF727 is 2.45:1 so you get a little deeper... it would change my total ratio from 53:1 to 59:1?? I would say if you can do it for cheep why not??, I have never seen the tf999 gears, and have been unable to find anything out about the swap? It will cost you 250.00 or so to change gears in the diff. Most likely cost 150.00 for a PnP tf999 that gives $100.00 bucks for any machine work to the gears or case to make it fit....

So hurry and do it so I know if it works:flipoff2:

I do believe that they sell lower first gears for the 727. Swapping the guts from a 999 into a 727 is something drag racers do because of the lower rotating mass of the 999.

I say search down a lower first gear set for the 727............if you need it.

The lower gear set is $400.00  If I can use the 999 set I'll save a lot of $$ If I can't I'll skip the swap.

Since the damn thang don't work anyway, it's a good time to stick in a Y-18 or T-19, close or wide don't much matter. Either one beats a slushbox, unless maybe yer crawlin' with it.

I have wheeled both and an auto is worth the trouble....

:shaking: :shaking: :shaking:

I've wheeled both as well, I was a littled concered at first with the slush box, but considering how well it's held up under my abuse, I'll stick with the auto. Also with my heep, I ate up two manuals, so there you go. You can't beat an auto on hill climbs.

Well, i say go for it. The lower gear will help a little.

I too have had both, in well equipped rigs. Auto has been better for me.

Havent heard of anyone that has went from a built automatic rig to manual. Have heard of many owners of built manual rigs going to auto though. ;)

The stock 999 gears won't even come close to fitting in the 727, that's why the low gear sets are 400$

I just fraged a rear sprag gear in my 727 2 weeks after installing the new one. Drat, and doulble Drat. Now i may do the jeep 727 adapter and Jeep Dana 300 i have been wanting to do with the divorced NP-205 behind that.

The autos are worth the troulble. Just run a cooler andf some of that sperm whale crap that they have made with synthetics now.
LubeGuard i think it is.

Hey, I got a clue.

My'77 thatI bought new came with a 727. After breaking it and another one about ten times I gave up and put a T-18 in it. 300K miles later it needs an overhaul. The last straw was getting stranded on a mountain when that damn bulkhead connector shorted out and drained my battery. Had to walk about ten miles. With a manual, I coulda got it going.

I know an auto will climb better, I said "unless yer crawlin' with it."
