: Public Land for Public Use Rally
Crowdog 05-15-2002, 12:43 PM Public Land for Public Use Rally
About 14 million acres in California, roughly 14 percent of its total land base, is already designated wilderness, off-limits to motorized vehicles, bicycles, horse-back riding, grazing, logging, mining, oil drilling and other forms of commercial development. Boxer wants to add another 2.5 million acres to that!
What
A gathering of multiple use advocates protesting Senator Boxer's Wilderness Act of 2002 and the continual closure of public land for multiple use. We will parade around the Capitol and deliver the petition to Boxer's office.
When
Tentatively set for Thursday July 11, 2002
Where
Main event will be held in Sacramento, CA
Other locations could include Senator Boxer's offices in:
San Francisco, San Diego, San Bernadino, Fresno & Los Angeles or wherever you can get enough people together to make it worthwhile.
Our Message
* Oppose Senator Boxer's Wilderness Bill *
* Reform the Endangered Species Act *

Crowdog 05-16-2002, 08:55 AM At each main location where a protest rally will occur, the following positions need to be filled. Right now, we REALLY need help at each location to scout out the area and propose meeting location and route (Facilities Leader).
Facilities Leader - Scout out the proposed route and meeting area and coordinate any issues with regards to gathering on private property (parking lots, etc.). Also coordinate communications and scouting on the day of the event.
Liaison Leader - Make contact with anyone we're going to meet (Doolittle, Boxer's office, State Capitol, Highway Patrol) and find out if we need any permits to gather, parade, etc. Also coordinate with any organizations/people that will be speaking at the event.
Participation Leader - We need to get the word out to clubs & shops (motorcycle, 4x4, etc.). Coordinate flyer with press/media leader.
Press/Media Leader - Make contacts with the media. Send out press release(s), etc. to get them hooked on covering the event. Coordinate with the media during the day of the event so they know who amongst us to interview. If we are successful at multiple locations, we need local leaders to coordinate press releases across the state.
This list is a "work in progress". I am sure that many other needs will arise. Please don't hesitate to make suggestions.
If you are interested in helping, please go to the Protest Rally forum (http://www.crowley-offroad.com/Snitz/default.asp?CAT_ID=3) and sign up.

Crowdog 05-17-2002, 07:03 AM Need some help in Sacramento:
Senator Boxer's office is
501 I St., Ste. 7-600
Sacramento, CA 95814
We need to determine a meeting location, and route for the event. Can someone volunteer to do some scouting of the area and make a proposal? We need a large parking lot near the Capitol to gather at 11AM on a Thursday.

Crowdog 05-18-2002, 01:00 PM Here is what is cooking for Sacramento:
1. Meet somewhere close to the Capitol to get organized.
2. Parade to draw attention around Capitol
3. Park in the public garage downtown (need to check out capacity).
4. Walk to the Capitol
5. Hear speakers (working on who)
6. Get back to gargage, drive to Boxer's office
7. Parade around Boxer's office a time or two
8. Deliver petition by those who CAN find parking (others' keep parading)
9. Return to original meeting location
We need help to determine:
1. Meeting location (parking lot) near the Capitol
2. Any issues with the public parking garage
3. Communication method - CB, FRS?
4. Who will speak? We are going to try for Congressman Doolittle.
5. Permit issues at the Capitol
If you can help with any of the above items, please post here or drop me an email.

Crowdog 05-22-2002, 01:49 PM I went downtown today to scout out the area for the Sacramento Protest Rally.
As someone here suggested, there is a Target store at the corner of Riverside & Broadway (south of Hwy 50). It is not a huge parking lot, but it should do. If anyone has any other suggestions of a staging area, please speak up. From there, the route could go as follows:
North on Riverside
Left on W
Right on 10th - down to Capitol
Left on "L"
Left on 9th
Left on "N"
Left on 10th
Do this loop a few times, then head for Boxer's office.
From 10th go North to "I"
Left on I
Right on 5th (Courthouse & Boxer's office is at 501 I)
Right on "H"
Right on 6th
Right on "I"
Do this loop a few times
At this point, we hope to have a speaker, so we all need to park.
There are parking lots right across from the courthouse on 5th. Probably no enough room for all of us to park, but two blocks away there is additional parking in Old Sacramento near the Railroad Museum.
Meet outside of the courthouse near the fountains. We listen to the speaker(s), then a few of us deliver the petition to Boxer's office. This will mostly be symbolic for the media, because Boxer's office is pretty small. Today, I went to the office to drop off a letter regarding BlueRibbon's Backcountry concept, and the office was closed for an interview. We are trying to get Congressman Doolittle to speak at the rally. Keep your finger's crossed.
Signs are very important, but keep them clean.
The Courthouse seems to be a better location for speakers because there is more abundant parking nearby.
This is all very tentative, and open to suggestions.

Crowdog 05-28-2002, 10:06 AM For the Sacramento Rally, I have had a few people mention Miller Park as a better meeting location instead of Target. Can anyone provide any more detailed information as to location and space?
Jon
Crowdog 06-06-2002, 04:39 PM For the Sacramento rally:
I got the permit today to have the rally on the West Steps of the State Capitol. The good news is we should have better media exposure there. The bad news is parking is a little more tight.
IceMan is going to do some parking garage scouting. I will report back soon.
Jon
Victor72 06-07-2002, 02:48 PM Thanks for the update. Keep us informed...
We will be there,With children in tow.

Crowdog 06-11-2002, 08:45 PM Looks like Miller Park will be the best location to meet. It is located where Broadway dead-ends into the Sacramento River.
We will be there starting at 11AM on July 11, 2002, and depart at Noon sharp.
Directions from Highway 50:
Hwy 50 west to the 10th Street exit
Left on Riverside
Right on Broadway
Left on Marina View where Broadway ends
At Noon, we will leave Miller Park for the Capitol. Here is the route we will take:
Broadway East
Left 10th Street
Left "L" Street
Left on 9th Street
Left on "N" Street
Left on 10th Street
If you plan to bike around the Capitol, and don't want to ride from Miller Park, you can drive to downtown and loiter around the Capitol with your bike until we arrive just after noon. Then join in the "parade".
We will do this loop a few times then park. There are parking garages on 10th at "L" and on "L" at 9th. The parking garages have a 6' 9" height limit. There are also 1 hour meters around our parade route that can be utilized.
Walk back to the West steps of the State Capitol with signs and mountain bikes.
We plan to have at least one speaker. Congressman Doolittle is out of town that day, but has agreed to send a statement for one of his staff to read.
Map of Miller Park and the Capitol can be found here:
