Dont do it, The 304 is an ok motor, but I would run a 360 or a 5.0 before I would run one in a YJ

I currently have a 304 in my CJ and I will be going a 360

I would agree that the 304 is ok but a 5.0 wold be better and easy to get a smogable motor.

I third the motion to skip the 304. If you want EFI go 302 or 350. If you want AMC go 360 or 401 (if you can find one).

4.0 swap might not be bad either, depends what you're after really.

I forth it:D
Don't do the AMC motor. You can build one "hellofa" 350 for the money you'll put into a 304, 360, or 401. The AMC v8's are fine motor's but not as cheap to assemble as the aforementioned 302 or 350. Just my .02

Number 5 here chiming in... Just going to start building the 401. If you want to stay true to the AMC, that's great. However be prepared to pay for it. For instance here is a cost comparison. $102 for the main bearings(AMC) $32 for Chevy. It adds up, trust me. So far to date I have over $3500 rapped up in the 401. Yes it will be a screamer for the Tow Slut but like I said I had to pay for it.
