Well I'm finally back at my FJ40 project and want to make a custom dash. I couldn't find any reference to programmable speedometers and stock t-case's, has anyone done this? What parts (speedo & sender) work with the stock t-case? If not electronic what adapter do I need for the cable to mate to a mechanical speedometer. Also I'd like opinions on Autometer vs VDO guages.

I just completed one on my 71 Cruiser about a month ago. I made my own dash panel out of aluminum and made 3 cut-outs.
There are 2 - 3 1/8 holes and a 2" hole in the center for my fuel gauge. I used the smaller VDO speedo and tach due to limited space.
I had an old Cockpit Tach and bought a matching Cockpit programmable Speedo 120MPH, PN VDO 437050, from Summit Racing for $113.95, an electronic sender, PN VDO 340-011 from a local speedo shop. Also you need an adapter that screws onto the 3spd transfer case. The e-brake cable is in the way and you need the adapter to clear it. The sender unit is screwed onto the adapter, which is basicall a short speedo cable. I had mine cut to @12". You could have it cut it any length. I paid $35 for it.
I really like the VDO over the Autometer because of the quality and the local speedo shop carries VDO only. Maybe both of them are just as good.
Good luck.

Hey thanks for the heads up on the parking brake cable. I had located a sender but forgot about the tight space behind the cable and it wouldn't have fit. I did order a new speedo cable that will connect the t-case and electronic sender but long enough to put the sender under the dash. For $6 more than a short cable I thought it would be more protected out of the elements.

Here ia a pic of my new dash. I used all Auto Meter guages because i have only heard good things about them. As far as getting a sending unit or spedo cable for an Auto Meter guage. Auto Meter works with a compant that will make you any sender or cable that you could possably need.
This is also a link to an old thread about custom dashes (alot of good info).

I didn't realize you could stick as much as 4 smaller gauges on that small panel.
Good job. I like it.
The speedo looks like a mechanical type. It's probably less expensive to get an adapter for that, than buying the electronic sender.
