: Durham shears lugs!!

Sorry if this is old news.

I am now totally, 100% sold on CTM ujoints. I watched Chris Durham shear his lugs off of one wheel. I never thought that that was possible. Then after they fixed that, on the next course he blew apart the front end in the process of rolling. He picked up the CTM joint and showed it to the crowd. It looked fine. The axle shafts were totally blown to bits.
Anyone have anymore to ad to the story?

Anyone else see a problem here? Great, the ujoint survived, but now what is going to get damaged is a moving target. Maybe they're too strong for their application.

I was watching this happen and the only problem I saw was that after he bent his tie rod he lost his cool and started hammering on the rig HARD. It's no wonder it broke.

Funny how almost every Chris Durham story starts out, "That crazy fawker was coming right at me, and i ran away" hahaha

At calrocs in Jackson I video taped him coming up right at me, and on the tape you can hear everyone yelling and hooting, and suddenly it was silence cause I was the only one left standing there  RUN!! hahaha That guy is fawkin CRAZY!!!!!! He deffinetly brings it. 1000%

If his new rig sounds anything like the old C10, you can hear when he looses his cool.

Obviously, none of us want anything to break, but the ujoint gives you a consistent, easy trail fix with minimal spare parts to carry. Like Warn hub fuses, designed to be slightly weaker than the hub & ujoints.

I don't think they're too strong in general, just too strong for the components around it.

I'm just thinking aloud.

if you think they're too strong, then don't buy them...

for those doing competitions, there is no "trail fix", if you blow a U-joint your weekend is over...

im trying to be open mined but...... every joint ive broke i took an axle with it! and by the time you get it all back together.... well you might as well forget the event......... i think the problem is the spacer... i have seen a few spacer related problems.... i my self had one...... its all about leverage... and spacers add leverage in the wrong places.... dont get me wrong i still use them for now.... but without spacers i think the chances would of been way less.....

SHUT UP!!!!!

With that said:
As has been said a thousand time before, 99.99% of the time you snap a joint you tweek the axle.

lol! Agreed. And if it's the difference between finishing a competition and not, then they're a good choice - an all or nothing application.

wrong! there a good choice because what you saw happens once in a well im not sure but it dont happen often...... i was breakin a joint and shaft every time i turned the key on my some biatch...... yes it is still not totally bomb proof but at least it can handle a little bit more than it used to..... btw i have broke ujoints with the clutch not even fully engaged.... so it wasnt breakin from heavy throttle....

Yeah, thats what I thought but correct me if I wrong, isn't shearing the bolts for the spacer basically the same thing as shearing the lugs?

Yeah.. basically... :P

I still laugh everytime i think about it.. i told chris once we get this out of the place he was broke and stuck in.. we would either back him in this area.. and fix it.. or pull it straight and fix it there...

His words...

Anything you say.. Im easy to please..
and damn his wife was cute :D

Yeah..chris geiger.. he did loose his cool after he bent the tie rod into the crank pulley the first time..

Even tho when you talk to him.. hes pretty quiet and relaxed.. i guess he lets his driving and right foot do the talking
