: trail box...tool and spare storage?
High5 05-15-2002, 07:26 PM so what are you using? i have a large box in the back of my jeep and i keep spares in it. in there i have a tool box that houses most of my tool's. anyway after some good hard wheeling everything is trashed in there. i would like to find a way to buy/build a good storage system to house tool, spare bolts, nuts, parts, fluids, etc. and not have them trashed. just looking for some cool ideas.
coyote 05-15-2002, 09:22 PM I use a black diamond box with other small boxes to hold parts and a 5 gallon ucket to hold the fluids.....
rockzooki 05-15-2002, 10:10 PM i use a blaack plastic box with smaller boxes inside. you can always make some tie downs if necessary
1988YJ 05-15-2002, 10:13 PM I took out the rear seat and put in the big tuffy. It locks and it's secure even in a roll over, room for tools, spares and stuff.
What I'm gonna do is build me a nice tool box that fits between the rear fenders of my heep, have a deep drawer on the bottom for stuff like an impact wrench, air wrench, blender, etc.... smaller drawers above that for my other various tools. then put a thin layer of foam on the bottoms of the drawers then get another peice of foam the same thickness as the drawer depths and cut out shapes for all my tools to go into. The top of the box will hold things like spare hubs, axles, U-joints, maybe a driveshaft or 2. All of those will be surrounded by foam as well and secured in place somehow. In front of the tool box will be a place to hold my tent, 2 sleeping bags, 2 sleeping pads, my camping cook kit, and 2 small duffel bags. there will also be a place for an ARB fridge cooler. oh yeah I forgot to mention I'll have some place for spare fluids as well. I just haven't figured out where yet. I may build one box that fills the entire back that integrates the fridge cooler with some ducting to an integrated center console that will hold a six pack of 20oz's, or I might just build the box and put it in so that there is room for a cooler in front of it.
TessaL 05-16-2002, 03:51 AM I have been using one liter oil bottles to store bolts and nuts
It takes little time to shake right size bolt from bottle but that way all keeps in order and don't get rust if some water is inside vehicle:D
Also all other small parts are possible to store at bottles and those bottles are easy to fasten to plastic boxes.
inphobic 05-16-2002, 06:19 AM I used a KNAACK welding supply box. It was one of the only boxes I could find that sits behind the rear seat in my EB. I removed 2 bolts from the rear of the roll cage and replced them with eye bolt one on each side with the screw hooks that thghten like steering linkage. Anyways. I welded angle inside the box to hold ammo boxes up off the floor so I could get to my tools ( in the ammo boxes) with out having to dig. I have my tow strap, 1 gal of all fluids(anti freeze,80-90,tranny fluid) except for motor oil which I have the 1.25 Gal of motoroil. I store alot of my loose trail fix items below the tool boxes. I have been very happy with it so far. Mine is alot smaller than what your after but the idea is the same. I also have made a bracket on the side to hold a scissor jack and I'm getting ready to mount my spare drive shafts and axle shafts to the front outside of the box.

SSGTWC 05-16-2002, 09:44 AM I'm going to use those side storage tool boxes, that I know Delta makes. That way I can still have what little of a bed I have left in my Scout, for other crap. :flipoff2: :D

Under bed Box, came from Pro Tech out of Levern TN They build to spec. I ordered it the exact size I wanted. Have to order though a trucking company that had an account. $260 to my door. Would have been cheaper but I got the fancy latches. Bought it before the Delta ones were readily available. Everything stays nice.secure, dry and dust free.
Weezer 05-16-2002, 12:45 PM AMO BOXES
they are water tight and are very strong
Erich In AZ 05-16-2002, 12:47 PM I picked up a BIG ASS ammo box at the swap meetfor $10.00. It has 4 latches on either side and 2 on each end. It's rated at 75lbs gross and water tight. I can fill that with smaller ammo boxes for the little stuff and a tool bag for the tools, as well as my strap, etc....
mytzlflick 05-16-2002, 12:52 PM ammo boxes gets my vote, waterproof, solid construction, lockable.
kwrangln 05-16-2002, 01:27 PM Ammo box's rule. Got a couple 50 cal cans bolted in the back of the heep now, but I'm gonna swap em out when I get the time for a couple 25mm box's I picked up. Weld a couple lock hasps under the handles and they are secure from theft. Just a hard earned tip tho, find some dessicant bags to throw in them to absorb any moisture. Being that they are water tight, any moisture that does get in them stays in them and does bad things to the contents.
That Mick 05-16-2002, 03:03 PM Big-ass Delta PolyPacker 90 w/ Ammo cans inside. The Packer holds the long stuff, like drive lines and the ackward stuff like 30 foot jumper cables. a couple ammo cans for tools. 2 20mm ammo cans for spare disty, spare carb, spare alt, u-joints, bearings, 10ft contol cable, water pump, fuel pump, rad hose, belts, ect, ect.

bigshawnf 05-17-2002, 04:40 AM I have a buddy that has a breaker and does stainless fab that made me a box that fits under my bed flush where the stock spare used to be. It is water tight and swings down when unhooked for access. It is the same size as a 31" spare but square of course works awsome . Good for storing all my junk and you can hardly see it when you stand by the truck so I don't worry about theft.
I built a floor size box in the rear of my YJ. It accommodates 2 huge wood drawers, one contains every single tool I have, the other contains recovery equipment and tie downs. The thing is only 7” or 8” high so I have a fully functional steel floor to use. I even moved the rear seat mounts on top of the box and when installed it still folds and tumbles.
offroadr35 05-17-2002, 10:31 AM i have the biggest tuffy box. Fits everything i'll ever need and locks securely.
