: 1990 F250 1 ton build
Ak_F250 01-24-2007, 12:52 PM I did this swap about a year ago, and figured Id put up some pics of what I did for you guys. Feel free to critique and/or flame anything I did, any input is appriciated.
Heres what I started with.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/AK_Ford/truck006.jpg
The drivetrain consists of a HD D44 front with an arb and 4.10's, and a SF 10.25 with a factory limited slip. Tires are 305-85R16 buckshots.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/AK_Ford/truck002.jpg
Heres the new rear axle. The 3.73's and gov-loc will be swapped out for 4.88's and a detroit.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/AK_Ford/truck007.jpg
I used sky mfg's bolt on brackets that utilize 3/4 ton chevy rotors and calipers.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/AK_Ford/truck020.jpg
Heres the axle 100% complete minus spring pads and shock mounts.
Ak_F250 01-24-2007, 12:57 PM http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/AK_Ford/truck005.jpg
And the front axle. Its a D60 out of a mid 80's F350. It will be recieving 4.88's and a tru-trac as well as custom built Hi-steer.

Front axle in with new springs and steering
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/AK_Ford/Truck004.jpg
After getting it all together and driving it for a couple months, I decided I needed to cut and turn the knuckles.
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c294/AK_Ford/Truck010.jpg
I ended up turning them 13*'s, which gave me a perfect driveline angle.

The finished product. New 38x15.5's and bushwacker cutouts.
Ak_F250 01-24-2007, 01:08 PM Did you replace the rubber brake lines?
Yes I did. It got stainless all around. I clamped them off because I wasnt going to reuse them.

Some poser shots from last weekend. It can lift a rear tire 42" (only at 38" in the pics). Now that I have a new tranny, after waiting 4 months, I can finally go wheel it!
offroadin 01-24-2007, 01:28 PM Sweet rig. Didn't the original Sterling rear have a VSS? Or do they just have the ABS sensor and the VSS is on the tranny or tcase?
1tonF100 01-24-2007, 02:51 PM looks good
Ak_F250 01-24-2007, 06:39 PM Sweet rig. Didn't the original Sterling rear have a VSS? Or do they just have the ABS sensor and the VSS is on the tranny or tcase?
The tone ring in the axle was for ABS only. The VSS is on the transfer case. I pulled out all the abs valve crap and replaced it with a 2# residual valve and a proportioning valve.
Mr. Death 01-24-2007, 07:53 PM What did you get the 56" springs off of? Do they ride alright? I have rear f150 springs right now, and even though they flex well, it rides like a brick.
Ak_F250 01-24-2007, 08:42 PM The springs are off of the rear of a 3/4 ton suburban. They were kinda tough to find. They ride like a dream, way, way better than stock. And the flex is awsome.

nkldrgr 08-30-2007, 10:39 PM Nice rig. I like it. Too tall for Alaska?
Panthers65 08-31-2007, 06:01 AM fawkin alaska, that looks really cold....
nice rig btw
Ak_F250 05-20-2008, 02:55 AM Guess I should update.
I ended up putting in a c6 with a full manual valve body and b&m Floor shifter (junk) to cure my tranny woes. Also got a set of suspension seats to replace the stock bench.
While I was spending money I decided the tires were a little on the small side for the height and weight of the rig, so I moved the front axle forward 2 inches and put some 42's on it.
Also installed a safari snorkle designed for a diesel disco.
Oh, the chevy emblem is a skidplate for the blue oval behind it:flipoff2:
hodor 05-20-2008, 07:36 AM The tone ring in the axle was for ABS only. The VSS is on the transfer case. I pulled out all the abs valve crap and replaced it with a 2# residual valve and a proportioning valve.
Any reason to pull the "ABS valve crap", or did you do it just for simplicity = removing unnecessary parts that no longer serve any purpose?
I also swapped the 10.25 FF Sterling in my 90 F350 for a 14 bolt, drums though. Brake pedal throw is a little longer than what I like although the truck still stops fine.
welndmn 05-20-2008, 09:08 AM Nice!

Both. With the 10.25, my brakes never felt right on loose surfaces. The rear abs kinda kicked in, but just enough to make the brakes suck instead of just stopping lockup. I wasn't sure what it would do without a speed signal, so I took it off and put an adjustable prop valve where the abs valve body was. The hole in the frame is perfect for mounting a jegs valve.
svt150j49 05-20-2008, 09:58 PM have any more pics of the snorkle?
Ak_F250 05-20-2008, 10:31 PM These are the only ones I have. Im storing it in a connex at my cabin (we have 160 acres of private land) since most of the public use trails up here are still to wet to wheel without doing damage.
The snorkle fit perfectly with the body, I had to make a little dent in the sheetmetal, you can see it in the second picture directly in front of the bottom of the window. The nuts are a bitch to get to too. I had to cut access holes in the inner fender and pull the wiper cowl and part of the fender to get them in and tight. Not fun. I used an E350 airbox inline between the snorkle and motor, with a mass air air tube (2 into 1 instead of 2 parallel tubes) off the throttle body.
hodor 05-21-2008, 05:56 AM Sorry if I missed it earlier in the post, but are those stock rear F250 springs? Noticed that you are not using any blocks, are you getting all of the lift with the shackle flip and lowering the spring hanger on the frame, or are those aftermarket springs?
broken2wd 05-21-2008, 06:21 AM The springs are off of the rear of a 3/4 ton suburban. They were kinda tough to find. They ride like a dream, way, way better than stock. And the flex is awsome.

Not quite, I'm deciphering as the 56" springs off a rear of a 3/4 ton Sub are being used on the front axle to replace the 52" springs...

Stock springs, shacke flip/drop hanger, 3" Blocks
I do not recommend running a block of any size with as much tire or hp as I have. The axle wrap is insane, I can get away with it for awhile because of the long rear shaft, but those springs are gonna die some day. I should buy new rear springs, or just lower the ass end down 3" and deal with it, but I need the height and dont want to drop any money on new springs, because im trying to get parts together to link the rear.
So do you have any pics of the D44 swap that it used to be on? I've been thinking about this to replace the D44 TTB in my F-250 since I am too poor to find a D60.
Ak_F250 05-21-2008, 03:07 PM So do you have any pics of the D44 swap that it used to be on? I've been thinking about this to replace the D44 TTB in my F-250 since I am too poor to find a D60.
I dont think so. I did it several years ago and didnt document it at all. It was basically bolt in. I had to move the spring perches out something like 2.5" on both sides. I made a steering arm and used the stock drag link. I think I needed a conversion joint for the pinion yoke too. It was an easy enough swap that I did it by myself when I was 16.
If you have a 250, you should have a D50 ttb setup. Going from that to a 44 is not an upgrade as far as strength imho, and I found out the hard way. I never broke anything with the 50 and 37's, I just replaced it because a bearing went bad in the housing and ruined it. With 37's on the 44, I couldnt turn without crushing the needles in the joints.
A 60 will pay for itself, and bolt straight in.
Nope its an 84 and not an HD so it has the 44, I dont plan to run over 33's or maybe 35's but I do have the diesel so strength might be an issue anyway. D50 would proabaly be sufficient but I figure it would be just as easy to put a solid axle in.

A friend of mine swapped in a solid 44 on a diesel. He bent the tubes fairly quickly. Not sure if it was an isolated incident, or if others have had probems with bending and large motors, but it may be something to think about.
Hmm, I could truss it, this one isnt my jumping rig anyway :grinpimp: I think a 44 out of a 78-79 would be stronger than the 44 at any rate. Well sorry about the hijack and thanks for the input
Ak_F250 05-21-2008, 05:47 PM No problem
smurray 05-21-2008, 08:00 PM you arent going to gain much if any strength with a stock solid D44 over a TTB D44. The carriers are identical, and a lot of the axles are exactly the same or comparable.
about the rear lift, why not make a longer shackle? Very cheap and way better than running blocks. Its only a matter of time before something breaks, or you spit one of them.
Ak_F250 05-21-2008, 09:58 PM With the loads I carry on the bed at times, Id be far more concerned with longer shackles than with blocks strength wise. I have never had a problem with the blocks other than axle wrap. Do I care for them? no. Am I worried about them failing? no.
Regardless, its a problem thats being addressed currently.
Ak_F250 08-18-2008, 05:19 AM I decided that the whole "flat" flatbed thing was getting a little old, so its time for something new.
With hunting season fast approaching, Im going to be working my ass off to get everything done.
The plan involves a new bed and rear winch. Im going to make the bed flat for the frame width with two tubes from the rear corners up to the body line at cab width for angled, tapered, boatsideish sides. It will make more sense as I progress.
Also gonna make a compartment that will hold 2-3 group 31 batteries for the winch and readywelder.
Todays progress
Got the bed off, removed the rear tank, moved the shackle hanger up and forward, and cut off everything behind it.

Roughed in the winch plate. It sits in about 1' so that the fairlead can mount in the center of the frame, instead of below it.

i might have missed it in the thread but, have you tried a third link to help axle wrap? the wrap on my bronco was STUPID! i had to replace 2 u joints in a week before i added a tractor link to the top of the housing and a crossmember, which eliminated it! but this might not even be an issue if the 4 link is comming soon.
zachis4wheeling 08-18-2008, 07:54 PM Awesome build. I like the winch setup on the rear.
I was up around Anchorage in 2000 on a backpacking trip and we backpacked all around the Chugach Mountain range. We also went and ice climbed all over the Matanuska glacier and took a day trip out to the tundra out past the big matanuska glacier. One thing I noticed with some of the Alaskan built rigs and trucks and shit when I was up there is that they are EXTREMELY beefy and overbuilt.....something I really dig. I mean it didn't matter if it was a big ass 3/4 or 1 ton or a little FJ40 landcruiser, they all were sportin 1ton+ axles with big ass tires and big ass drivetrain components. I kinda wondered about this and if it was coicidental that it seemed like all the AK rigs were big, burly n overbuilt or if there was a reason for it, until it dawned on me. These guys are going miles and miles off the road, possibly hundreds, to go four wheeling. And that's just off the fawkin road. Then when ya finally do get back to the road, which in some cases can take hours in itself, then you gotta go hours and hours by road for help and parts.
Goin out there and beatin around in a marginally built rig just wouldn't cut it, for fear of failure. If yur truck breaks in the lower 48, usually there is someone around within an hour or so who can help out on the trail or w/e....yur truck breaks in the Alaskan bush, you DIE! I mean, I know everyone wants strong well built rigs that ain't gonna let em down, but I think the Alaskans actually have a legitimate reason FOR building them so strong, unlike some folks who just build em to one up the next guy. They need them for survival in some cases.
Very awesome rig man. Very purposeful and whatnot. Looks exactaly like the parts truck I pulled my Dana 60 except yurs doesn't have tortilla-chip-rust n shit all over it.
You recognize the places I mentioned above at all and wheel around em at all?
Ak_F250 08-19-2008, 01:16 AM We cant really wheel anywhere in the chugach range, its all subdivisions, state parks, or military.
Your right about why everything up here is overbuilt. If you break down, you better have a way to fix it, because help can be days away, if you can contact anyone at all.

I just wish I had the skills to utilize it fully. I doubt many of the shops on here have access to some of the cool stuff I do, and yet they can turn out amazing products and rigs. My hat is off to them. I am spoiled to say the least.
bigwhitetruck 08-23-2008, 02:30 PM did you just extend your rear hangers
Ak_F250 08-23-2008, 03:52 PM Yes, the rear is a shackle flip/drop hanger.
jmd273 09-21-2008, 01:18 PM Have any recent pictures, with the flat bed completed? I'm thinking of doing something similar with my truck.
Ak_F250 09-21-2008, 03:12 PM Not much progress, 70 hour weeks tend to kill any motivation I have. I still have all the tube work to do.
I got the bed done once, but it just didn't come out looking like I thought it would, so I started over.
I got some stauns for it too, just have to find the time to install those.

thanks
Ak_F250 09-22-2008, 01:41 PM I think the winch plate is 1/2 and the rear portion is 3/8 or a little thicker. Its bent at a 90 and wraps around the bottom of the frame for a little added support.

Im going to make little pads where the sidewall of the tire can sit on the crosspieces. That way its not relying on the upright platform to support it completely, only clamp it. Otherwise Ill have to brace the crap out of it, and I think it looks clean as it is. I think Ill mount the powertank to the bottom, that way its easy to get to but wont get frozen under snow in the winter.

f250rollinon37s 01-11-2009, 09:04 PM looks good
oober 01-11-2009, 09:55 PM Nice project!
good idear on the tire rack slider.
solidrunner 01-12-2009, 05:25 PM You said that you used a mass air tube to make the throttle body merge into one for the snorkel. Where did you get it and what is it off of? I'm doing a mass air swap on a built EFI 460 for my '78 F-250 and haven't found anything to make it work.
Ak_F250 01-13-2009, 03:53 AM The tubes off a bronco. A truck with mass air has the same one. Anything through '96 should work.
Are you converting a 460 to fuel injection, or converting it from factory speed density to mass air? Im sure the throttle bodys bigger on the 460, I know the 5.8 is bigger than the 5.0. The TB on the 460 is rotated 90* compared to the small blocks too isn't it? Why not just make a Y out of exhaust pipe or those do it yourself cold air intake things that the autoparts stores sell?
solidrunner 01-13-2009, 11:13 AM It is a factory efi motor, so I'm going from speed density to mass air. I was going to make one out of exhaust tubing, but I figured if I could find a nice factory plastic one, I would just go with that instead. Thanks for the info, your truck is awesome and that bed is going to be bad ass.
ydocnitsua6705 01-13-2009, 05:15 PM bad ass build man im about to start on my 83 f250 just simple stuff but lookin at yours ive gotten some great ideas i just wonderin if you"d thought about the little acess whole you put in for the winch to freesprool and enguage dont ya think that with the smaller flat bed there would probably be stuff piled on top of the cover?
Ak_F250 01-15-2009, 05:06 AM Yeah, I figured there would be gear on the cover at some point. The knob is still easy to get at from underneath if need be. Id like to make a cable or electric actuator for it at some point.
The beds done save for a couple light tabs. I didnt have time to snap any pictures of it done, but I braced up the front more and decked the areas in front of the fenders. I also added expanded steel to the rack for a floor. Its on the truck right now so that I can get the mud flaps figured out to keep it legal.
Hopefully Ill get it sandblasted and painted by next week.
Tried to install the first staun on my spare and blew up the tube.

samoht517 01-22-2009, 12:17 PM I like that bed alot. Might use the idea to redo mine.
Ak_F250 01-25-2009, 11:11 PM I keep finding other things I want to do instead of just finishing the bed. Im reworking the bumpstops all around and making shackle hangers for the rear that use a normal two piece shackle instead of the ford thing. That way ride height adjustments are easy. I moved the pivot point up and forward a couple inches so I can run a longer shackle.
New shackle hanger. Sorry for the bad pictures, the battery was almost dead and it wouldnt focus right.

Ak_F250 02-19-2009, 02:22 AM Ive got alot done, but I forgot to take pictures.
Picked up a pair of 12" travel bilsteins for the front. Got the shock towers extended and redid the bumpstops so they actually work.
The beds done and painted. I spent all weekend cleaning up the frame from the cab back. Got it painted as well.
The shackle hangers are on, along with some 6.5" shackles.
Rewired and plumbed the fuel system. Redid the taillight harness and got all the cable run for the rear winch.
Hopefully Ill get the bed on this weekend and snap some pictures of the progress.
Ak_F250 02-21-2009, 07:30 PM Shocks, bumpstops, and hydro assist.
I know the ram location isn't great, but its all I could do. The tie rod only moves 4", so id need a wierd ram. Ill make a guard if it looks like it'll get hit too much.
I got a new cast iron extension housing, so, barring any unforseen problems, it should be driving this weekend. The beds done and ready to be wired and bolted down.

And yes, that leaf is broken
Ak_F250 03-28-2009, 08:24 PM I finally got it moving under its own power. Still lots to do, mainly wiring.
I ended up getting 2 8d batteries and a huge ambulance inverter/battery charger. Between the two I should be able to weld, winch, and run ac stuff for a good while.
Transfer case with rotor and bracket. I still need to work on the bracket, it puts the caliper too far out.

Steering and cooler. It is so much nicer to drive with the hydro assist. Porting the steering box wasn't hard at all.
I know the zip ties are crap, im working on it.:flipoff2:

Ak_F250 03-28-2009, 08:25 PM Bed painted and installed. The last two pictures show the flares I made. Im not sure how I like them yet, but they do cut down on the crap that the tires throw up.

Ak_F250 01-01-2010, 11:20 PM I never finished the parking brake. I sold the truck over the summer.
