ok ive f'n had it with steering box's. my stock one blew when the jeep was stock. im on my 4th AGR box and im STILL having problems.

im planning on doing the west texas offroad ram assist setup. but the thing is now im questioning my steering box.

what other boxes can be bolted up to a TJ without any modifications to the mounts or the steering shaft.

CJ Lagos made a comment to me once about getting a saginaw box, is that the route to go?

im taking any suggestions you guys have before i send the box i have over to matt. the problem im having with the boxes is that hte output shaft ends up wobbling and the seal isnt worth a sh$#. i go though a TON of fluid. i dont know if there is a "fix" for the box or not, im just fed up, ive never had good steering with any of the AGR boxes so if i can get rid of it without spending 300 bucks on a box ill be thrilled.

hmm will a grand waggy box work? i have a 73 grand waggy parts vehicle (olnly has 50k miles)

thanks guys

Once you go to ram assist the ram will take alot of the load and therfor the box will last.

Like CJDean said the ram will take most of the stress off of the box, but not all of it.
The TJ does have a Saginaw box in it already. But it is a new vertion case. The new input and output seal in them SUCK big time and the bearing is farter up into the case. I can either get you another box to swap all you intrnal parts into or machine your box to accept the old style seals and bearing. Either way I'll be glad to help.
I think a Chevy S-10 box is a direct swap but i can't remember.

Yup - TJ already has a saginaw...

i think the Suburban box is a direct bolt in... anyone confirm this? It is saginaw but is geared different - same pitman output shaft, same bolt pattern, same pump pressure requirement.

Use a YJ Steering box. They bolt right up and they don't leak like TJ ones. They have bigger O-rings inside then the TJ ones. 3 people in our local club have upgraded there TJ's to YJ steering boxs and have not had a problem yet. My Jeep is an 89 and has never leaked.

I guess the question is, When you say you keep blowing up boxes, what keeps happening and why?

If your on your 4th box, I would look into why things keep failing especially if it keeps failing in the same spot.

But like every one said a YJ box will work, same mounts, same saginaw manufacture, better seals.

the boxes have failed in every configuration ive had the jeep in... DEAD stock to 38s. and about 3 different steering setups.

Same thing happened to Phil's 97 Jeep TJ from my Club and he replaced his with a YJ box and has not had a problem since. He runs 38.5 swampers. And I just replaced a friends 97 TJ box with a YJ box and now there are no more leaks.

My stock box was getting ready to the 38's.....now that I have ram assist it doesnt strain the box at all. I blew up the pump though....unrelated ;)

thanks a bunch guys. i talked with matt. im gonna send him over one of my AGR boxes and have him play with it. he said some of the AGR's you could upgrade to bigger seals and stuff. if not ill swing by the junkyard and grab a YJ box and send him that.

either way im putting matt's ram assist setup on the puppy.

thanks again
