: 91 exploder axle swap
nsane79ferd 01-25-2007, 09:06 AM OK i am new to all of this but here goes...I have a 91 explorer 4x4(4.0 auto overdrive) and a 79 f150 w/ a 351m c-6,205 a d44 hp front and a 9 in rear and i would like to put my t-case and axles under the explorer and was wondering if the np 205 will bolt to the factory overdrive explorer tranny..if so what mods am i looking at doing to the case of the tranny and is it a fairly simple swap it will never see the road it will be a trailer queen and for more mild trails until i get chromo axles and new superflex coils and duff rad. arms..i know i will have to fab mounts for the rad arms and was wondering what the track difference and frame width difference is (i dont have access to the explorer for another week or two)any answers will help!
wanderer-RRORC 01-25-2007, 09:56 AM um ok...t-case...NO...I think the output splines are diffrent..and I KNOW it wont bolt to the stock housing...custom jobbie all the way...
and why swap the rear end?? its probably 5in wider than the stock 8.8 in the sploder..and the spring perches will have to be moved in 2.5in on each side...the front end wont be as wide...
you need to goto
www.rrorc.com
www.therangerstation.com
www.explorerforums.com
and READ READ READ how to do the swaps...otherwise you'll get 1/2 way through..get frustrated and not finnish the swaps..
and a 9in is SLIGHTLY stronger than the 8.8 31spline..but the 9 has more aftermarket axles available..
TOUGHGUY 01-25-2007, 12:00 PM You can use an EB C4 with a C5 bellhousing to mate to the 4.0 (the expensive way) or you can simply adapt a C6 to the 4.0 using someguy's adapter I saw on RROC! (I'll go find the link fur ya)
My question is why you want to run the 205? The BW1350-54 you have has deeper gearing and would be strong enough.

nsane79ferd 01-25-2007, 12:38 PM ok i want the whole wider axle thing for several reasons one being more tire less lift= lower center of gravity and i can handle moving the perches i am a very experienced fabricator however i didnt know the stock t-case would be strong enough and the main purpose of the swap is it will be the only one of its kind around here oh i also forgot to mention it is a 2 door sport:cool2: and thanks to yall for responding and the link to the adapter kit i think i will stick with stock tranny and t-case till they blow up then i will go back to the c-6 and 205...oh and btw does anyone know if 4.10s will be low enough with 35" tires we dont have any real rocks around here other than a old parking lot that got crushed and piled up in a feild and a few washouts
wanderer-RRORC 01-25-2007, 01:12 PM if you want more tire with less lift the 9in wont give it to ya..get out the sawzall and trim the fenders..otherwise your still going to have to lift it..even MORE because the centerline of the tire wont be within the fender tub..it will hit the lip of the fenderwell..actually causing you to loose tire clearance..
and Gremmy does good work...I have his first STUBLER
35's and 4.10's...borderline...4.56/5.13 are better ratio's...but it will be better than my old 3.73's and 35's (in the process of a swap)
nsane79ferd 01-25-2007, 01:21 PM oh i have very good sawzall skills and dont mind doin away with most if not all of the fenders but i would rather cut outer body then try to rectify it rubbing when they are stuffed not to mention i already have a lot of money tied up in the nine inch i will prolly go to 5.13s down the road after i get the thing together not to mention it looks cool when the tires stick out that far!!!imo anyway our local wheelin spot is kinda unfriendly to small and midsized vehicles due to their width or lack of it hard to straddle in a fullsize as it is
wanderer-RRORC 01-25-2007, 05:47 PM not to mention it looks cool when the tires stick out that far!!!imo anyway our local wheelin spot is kinda unfriendly to small and midsized vehicles due to their width or lack of it hard to straddle in a fullsize as it is
ours is tight..but my girl got about 400lbs topheavy lastyear..so the extra width will help...very few FS trucks run our local trails..just too tight..heck..my sploder suffered enough body damage BEFORE the cage..
heres mine...none from the front yet...just got the draglink made today..but busted my 3/4 holesaw bit tonight...so I cant get the axleside mount installed till I get anotherone..
sterling 10.25 and a HD 44...currently 4.10's..gonna run this year and see how they do...then off to 5.13's for the 38's I want..:grinpimp:

nsane79ferd 01-27-2007, 09:32 AM well i do appreciate all of the input and the tips ..I am definatly going to do the build and as soon as i figure out how to post pics i will get them on here the build will probably start sometime after march....ohhh yeah one more thing does anyone make forged pistons and crank for the 4.0 i am thinking about turbo charging it 4-5 psi at most and maybe a lil nitrous to get the spool up:smokin: (you know for the occasional mudbog)

Wicked_Exploder 01-27-2007, 01:13 PM Don't let others scare you. I did the swap with the help of a friend in 21 hours start to finish. Plus the extra stability of the full widths is awesome. Combine the new width with the explorers ( 4dr) wheel base and you have an awesome capable rig! Heres some pictures of mine:

I run the factory explorer leafs in the rear with the axle spring perches moved to match. This is a nice flexy setup in the rear trust me:)
The front I have stock 79 Bronco springs / trac bar mount and coil buckets. I re drilled the lower coil mounts on the D44 and turned them around so they faced in and I did not have to space the coil buckets on the explorer frame. It all went together SOO smoothly! The ride is awesome and a little on the soft side for street use but on the trails its a killer setup!

IROK Cherokee 01-31-2007, 07:51 PM Although I wheel a B2 it's on full widths. Close to an Exploder
