: atlas: how well do we pack?
slo-vic 05-15-2002, 09:51 PM Hi guys, I'm very reluctant about posting. I do not want to be "pimping" our products. I hope this question will not be considered "commercial" in nature.
My question is simple. How did your Atlas arrive? Was the box intact? 10 years ago the max for UPS was 70 lbs. It is now 150 lbs. I am not accusing UPS drivers of poor service, but I could see how drivers hate the Atlas (130 lbs). So, How was your atlas delivered? Thanks, Vic-Advance Adapters inc
hmm, If you respond, I will select (random) 3 for a free atlas t-shirt
Jeepmangled87 05-15-2002, 10:02 PM mine made it here just fine the box was a little messed up but it was all good.:skull: :smokin:
papabear 05-15-2002, 10:04 PM A friend of mine just bought an atlas and it was screwed up internally,so they sent him another one and they put it in and it is making some shitty noises too. whats up with that:flipoff2:
Funkel 05-15-2002, 10:07 PM The one I got was perfect. The inside foam really held everything together.
I was happy.
Seth
FULLSIZE 05-15-2002, 10:16 PM the one i bought arrived at the wrong address, so i think you should send one to my current address:
you caught me. i never bought one, but you could send me a t-shirt if you want:D
LordRatner 05-15-2002, 10:24 PM MY NAME IS SETH TOO! i never got one but my friend is all smiles.
can i have a t shirt?
CHOKEu 05-15-2002, 10:56 PM MINE was good, no complaints- #1979
Kevin
Explorer 05-15-2002, 11:30 PM Vic, it took me 20 minutes to get my T-case out of that foam :D I would say on a scale of 1-10 the packaging was a 10!
Ramstein 05-15-2002, 11:37 PM The box looked like it was dragged behind the UPS truck but the T-case was packed great and survived obvious abuse!
High5 05-16-2002, 02:20 AM mine came and was in very good shape. both boxes. they would really have to jack it up bad to affect the atlas in there with all the molded foam. heck i had a hard time getting that crap off! anyway like i said both the atlas and the shifter/acc. box were in near perfect shape.:D
TPIJeep 05-16-2002, 06:46 AM Vic,
My box looked like it had been thru a war but the foam held up well and the Atlas was in perfect condition. I think 99% of the UPS handlers will be careful with the package, it just seems the other 1% handled mine :D

we ordered 2 at the same time. One of the boxes
was fine.
The other looked like a tank ran over it. But
the accessory box and atlas were both fine.

(You guys should seen the little weasel UPS-driver
unload my jd2 and the dies)....THAT was funny....
slowJEEP 05-16-2002, 07:19 AM I broke a sweat trying to remove the atlas from its press fit in the foam but it was in perfect shape and all of the parts were there.
Scout Dude 05-16-2002, 07:22 AM I think that the blow-foam that they use really eliminates the possibility of damage...mine was perfect. The outside of the box was fine too though!
RokHeep 05-16-2002, 07:36 AM My box looked like crap, but the atlas looked fine. It took some abuse. #2172

I wouldn't consider this "pimping". Infact, I think everyone here would like to hear from guys like you more often.
Customer service is the name of the game and the guys that are concerned about customer service are usually the successful ones.
Someone at UPS told me once, "when you are done packing something, pick it up about waist high and drop it on a concrete floor. If it survives without coming apart or breaking, then it is ready to ship". I would also plan on something that weighs 150 pounds, being dropped on it.
OH YA, my shirt size is XXL:D:D
I think the way you pack those t-cases is perfect. I had one heck of a time getting the top piece of foam out just so I could look at the expensive piece of garage art the I bought (now if I could only find the time to finish the rest of my rig). :D: I can't see how you could improve on it without too much trouble. My shipping boxes looked perfect when the UPS man dropped them off.

Good for you for caring:beer: I'll accuse UPS of poor service for you. I just waited 3 months for beadlocks and when they arrived 1 box looked like it had been ripped apart and thrown out a window (at least a 2nd story window). The inner lip was bent and the dish is a little off in this area due to the bend. This was all care of UPS during transit from CA. I know it wasn't my specific delivery guy because he always take care of my sh!t and talks with me about the Jeep.
I only wish other companies put as much effort into securing their products as you appear to with you foam.
Now my shirt size is XL:D
Pdaddy 05-16-2002, 08:04 AM I hope to soon test your abilities to package an atlas, I can tell you (I ship aircraft parts) that the package is totally at the will of the poeple that touch it, some ups peeps give a shit, some dont, that is just how it works, its random violence on shipping!
(I hope I randomly get picked for a shirt)
Let me guess.....Allied Wheel? I rejected my Allied beadlocks because the boxes were totally damaged. They used thin cardboard and no padding. Hello??? The answer I got from them was..."you can't hurt our wheels no matter how rough the shipping is. They are thick steel wheels and may only have a few scratches on them". WTF???? I buy new wheels and I am to expect scratches? I know I am going to bash the crap out of them, but at least let ME put the first scratches in them.

You got it. I too could not believe they shipped those wheels without any padding. I am getting a good response from them on the bent one though. I should here today about a replacement. I'm keeping the bent one for all my trouble I've had with them and if they want it back I'll ship it w/o a box and a sign that says "Smash me. I'm tough and don't need packing".
Oh yeah, mine had a few scratches on the lips also, what a bunch of sh!t:rolleyes:
JohnBuuu 05-16-2002, 08:45 AM mine was in perfect shape. the foam works really well.

FRAMETWISTER 05-16-2002, 09:25 AM I am a UPS driver If you do get a box that looks like it has been ran over (9 times out of 10 ) it was the belt system they load and unload them on. The drivers get paid pretty good money to deliever your boxes. thanks Jason
welndmn 05-16-2002, 11:12 AM I dont own one........................yet
But my buddies came like 3 months ago, its looks like someone kicked it out of a jet at 20,000 feet, the box was messed up!
but the atlas was fine.
does anyone else thing UPS drop kicks packages off the truck?
84scrambler 05-16-2002, 12:26 PM slo-vic, I e-mailed your company about an internship and recieved no responce. Does your company do any hiring for the summer? I'm a third year physics student at Cal Poly if that helps any.
MetalMender 05-16-2002, 01:43 PM We ordered two earlier in the year and all boxes and contents were delivered in good shape.
That foam stuff is the nuts.:smokin:
rich
The box my atlas came in was trashed. One corner of it was torn off and the rest of the box looked like it was rolled around and dropped a few times but the atlas was fine. The UPS guy even waited for me to open the box and check for damage. He was impressed with the packaging and the fact the t-case was in perfect shape.
I wish other companys would package their shit this good.
tonto 05-16-2002, 04:30 PM I'm in the shipping bus. and as far as U.P.S. go's it's my understanding that with the exception of the drivers the ramp and loaders are part timers and U.P.S. doesn’t make those workers full timers due to the non -benefits advantages of part timers with that said it's like defense contractors the cheapest bid gets the job most of the time the ramp and loaders are not highly paid workers and it's just a job to them not a career that they value very highly, and I can relate to not being a big fan of heavy & bulky packages, what sucks his as I'm sure slo-vic knows it's hell to get U.P.S. to admit fault and pay out on a claim and I here now the have a private co. dealing with damage/claims, a private co. that probably gets a bonus for paying out the least amount of $$$ per fiscal year.
By the way it took me longer to get my Atlas out of the foam than it did to install it in my Early Bronco.;)
dorfs 05-16-2002, 04:48 PM Still saving for the Atlas, but the NV-4500 I bought from you arrived in a 1/2 smashed box. The spary in foam prevented any damage. Does this qualify me for a shirt?
I must have extra careful package handlers up here. Both boxes were in perfect shape. No complaints here.
Todd
Jettech 05-16-2002, 05:59 PM Guess I better get in on this free T-shirt:D
Mine was perfect, only thing the cardboard was a little ATF soaked.
It was a bitch to get out of the foam like everyone else, broke out in a sweat.
Atlas # 1418
4x4extreme 05-16-2002, 06:02 PM I hope mine gets here intact
FRAMETWISTER 05-16-2002, 06:04 PM In defense for UPS again the part-time employees Dont get paid a whole lot , but do get full benifits . You have to start at the bottom before you go to the top( SENORITY) . Thats how it works. Most of the time your pakages will travel down chutes, slides , and belt systems and the heavier the box the faster it goes. If you ever have a chance to see the inside of a bigger UPS Hub you will know why shit gets damaged. Most drivers will let check a damaged box when they deliever it because they dont want to come back and pick it up tomorrow. It is a good job . UPS driver Thanks jason
slo-vic 05-16-2002, 06:45 PM Jason, I never intended this thread to be a "UPS bashing" UPS is an excellent company that offers a great service. I think all here will agree that we did not realyze how important UPS was until you went on strike a few years ago. I rarely have any problems with UPS. As I said before, I am not accusing UPS or its' drivers of poor service. I only know that bigger, bulkier packages are prone to more abuse. I want to make sure that our packaging is up to par. I can only say "I'm sorry" if I have offended any UPS employees as that was not my intention. Vic
FRAMETWISTER 05-16-2002, 08:54 PM I am not offended at all . I just wanted to make clear that most of the damage comes from are belt system. We are not out there drop kickin your atlas. When I deleiver one I want to know what it is going in and when are we going wheeling. It takes a little more shit talking to get me fired up. OH get ready for stike #2 our contract is back up and managements not listening. early warning ,but be ready! I wouldnt mind a shirt!
Station 05-16-2002, 09:09 PM hehehe I couldn't believe what I saw a UPS delivery guy doing this week. It seems that UPS guys that have industial routes are a little less friendly with the packages than those that deliver to peoples homes.
I was on a delivery for the machine shop that I work for to our power company at the factory where they make the huge machines that handle the power that goes to the whole state.
The UPS guy pulls up, opens the back door, and start just tossing boxes out of the back on to the ground. The boxes were in perfect condition before he mistreated them. The bad part was that what was inside the boxes were custom made motherboards that control some of the massive machines that they make at the plant $$$ . As the boxes piled up on the ground the boxes on bottom got smashed more and more, untill motherboard peices were hanging out of holes all over the boxes.
After he has unloaded them the guy stacks them all up on a cart, an drolls them into the building not even paying attention to the destroyed boxes.
As I left the recieving area, I noticed that there were all sorts of motherboard peices all over the asphalt.
We have allot of these kinds of things happen around our shop and various, suppliers/customers that we deal with.
I am not saying that all UPS guys are bad, but the few who are can really screw things up for their customers:mad: .

84scrambler, first of all, I'm sorry that a prompt response was not given to your email. We receive a huge amount of emails each day. I personally average over 100 emails each day and that is just my personal email at AA. Sometimes It comes down to "should we answer the phone or the email". I know that is not a good excuse, but we have to opt to the phone.
I do not hire people, but this is a great company to work for. As a college graduate who went through the same experience of searching for work, I have one suggestion; Don't email for work. call! call! call!, good luck!, Vic
FRAMETWISTER 05-16-2002, 09:22 PM If we got caught doing somthing like that the supervisors start riding with you and that makes a shitty day. They wright you up ror every thing. You try to keep them away from your route so they dont go and F@#k it up! I had a supervisor increase my route during X-mas from 150 stops a day to 300 stops. I went from working a 9hr day to a 12hr day.
84scrambler 05-16-2002, 09:35 PM thanks for the tip slo-vik. I will give them a call tomorrow.

Oh shit not again!!!, That was a f#cking nightmare!
Chris Geiger 05-16-2002, 09:43 PM We have ordered two and both of them arrived at the shop in good shape.
We have also ordered several hundred dual case kits over the last year and all of them arrived just fine.

Not to press the issue, but just fyi, we currently have a cal poly engineering student working for us.
I'll let you know about the packaging IF it shows up tomorrow(two weeks late). I understand problems arise, but when I'm given a shipped date three different times, it's frustrating. Anyway, tomorrow's the day(I hope):D
Maybe a shirt? maybe not
BTW, hope you got the sewer fixed,,,,, sounded like a shitty day.
:D :D
jeeper111 05-16-2002, 10:56 PM I had a ranger overdrive sent to me and it was in great shape. I love the foam packing but the only complaint I can think of is that the foam smelled like shit in my apartment. Worth it though for not having anything be damaged. :D
slo-vic 05-16-2002, 11:25 PM I the foam smelled like shit in my apartment. Worth it though for not having anything be damaged.
.
If it smelled good, people would try eat it
slo-vic 05-16-2002, 11:39 PM Pyro, waiting for parts suck, I tell people 5 weeks for an Atlas. We had an issue last week concerning a small part supplied by an outside vendor. Many of us said modify, but the Atlas head guy is more anal than Martha Stewart. Sorry about delay
ExtremeCJ 05-17-2002, 06:02 AM I had my atlas built for my 5.9L ZJ and it was the first one you guys ever build and i was the R&D guy for you and i had to shorten my input shaft, so you guys then started making that spacer for ZJ's. your welcome:flipoff2: . that packaging was great, but then i blew the atlas up and it was within the 6 month warrenty, so you guys said you would take care of it, i had thrown away the original box and i really did not want to take it to mail boxes etc for packing so you guys were nice enough to send me out a empty box and then i repacked it and sent it back out. while you were fixing the problem i also asked if you could switch the front output to a pass side drop for the CJ-7 i got and you guys of course took care of that. when i recieved the atlas back i was pleasently suprised:
http://www270.pair.com/mc41/December%2027/atlaspolishbest.jpg
You guys were nice enough to have to polished for me. :rasta:
J/K i did that myself because i used to think i want to show my CJ and not get it dirty, what was i thinking :rainbow: .
it is case #667 i bet you never made a #666 because of the whole devil thing but you just skipped #666 and numbered mine #667 so in reality i do have the #666. i guess that is the reason why it blew up. :flipoff2:
Oh my ...... That is one shiney t-case. How long did that take you?
Chief yelling alot 05-17-2002, 10:30 AM crome
:flipoff2:
looks like UPS should invest in one of thes
http://www.apluswhs.com/cgi-bin/sql/images/251.jpg
ExtremeCJ 05-18-2002, 07:21 AM Chief:
No chrome, it is aluminum, it is called polishing. I think(2 years ago) i paid $100 to have the the tcase, bellhousing, and tranny -tcase adapter polished.
It is no longer polished, it is not caked with dirt and dried mud and salt, looks like the rest.
