OK, I'll try ...
First I buy one of the first Tera-Low (3 gear) kits and rebuild the D300. Next I hear these are breaking and there's a new 5 gear "upgrade".
At least I didn't have to buy one of these, I glared into the eyes of Tera's pres. instead ... though many had to shell out for the improved version. He told me the reason some of the gears were breaking was that some of the OEM's were hecho in Mexico and the made in USA gear sets would show a good patten, quiet, and there was no problem with them except being a little more noisy than the improved versions. He said the Mexico gears were especially noisy and along with a bad pattern these should be replaced with the upgrade kit's gears.
Mine was quiet and working well so I decide I'd rather take the three 'improved' gears and buy a pair of sliders for $300 from Tera so I could keep my fist TC intact and build another with the full improved five gear set.
Now I have two Tera-Low'd D300s ... both with fragile output shafts, though the second one was sporting cryo hardened shafts ... more $$$$ Oh, and that clocking ring from Go2Guys ...
Up steps Advance Adapters with THE fix ... a high dollar rear shaft upgrade for the D300! Oh, boy! And if I get one of those, I will have something that's "almost" as good as an Atlas.

Hey, do yourself a favor ...

If you have the money why would you even hesitate to get the atlas.

If you have the money, just buy the damn atlas and be done with t-case worries forever. Not having to worry about that part breaking (especially such an important part) is a bonus to the quality and reduction the case can give you.

BUY IT!

you are so retarded...

i remember when you said that the atlas was a waste of $$ because you could get 4:1 gears for your 231, and a 2WD low kit... look how that turned out. Then you said that you could run a D20 with low gears, then you said D300 with novak outputs, and 4:1 gears, now you are back to considering the atlas. I'll tell you what you really need, is to invent a time machine so you can go back and get rockwells instead of the 44-9" combo, and get an atlas instead of rebuilding your 231 - TWICE!

IF YOU HAVE THE MONEY - BUY IT!, IF NOT SHUT UP!

run 2.6 in the 300. whats wrong with that? i wouldn't run 4-1 in a 300. if you have to go lower, get an atlas. :p

LT230

Stronger than an atlas
3.2:1 low range

bolt-on underdrive available for really low gears.
bolt-on under/over drive in progress, hopefully available soon!

cliffy,

search for posts by FC Fred he has one of these adapted to a 435 case I think it seems pretty cool to me. Also there is info from him on the SRC board.

if I could afford an atlas and did not have a rear axle yet then the atlas vs lt-230 argument would be hard
but since I'm poor, but have access to a machine shop, and I'm friends with a landrover guru I went with the lt-230

here are the pro's and con's of the lt-230

pros
easily found in many landrovers and range rovers
adaptors available to many tranny's (guesstimate $800 maybe cheaper)
but recomend putting them behind sm-465, or np-435 (I'm running a sm-420, but had to grind the case to clear the front output, un-fortunately in order to get 1/8 inch of clearance I also got a hole in the side of my tranny so now it's rebuild and reinforcement time, though differ tranny's have not had this problem)
low high range 1.2 to 1 (this lets you run stronger higher R & P gears with big tire for example I'm running 4.10's with 38's )
Lower low range than many t-cases -3.3 to 1
strong aluminum case
rear mounted e-brake
bolt in over-underdrive in the works
gears and shafts that make a d-300 look like a toy, and is comparable to an atlas and 205

con's
different versions available some with better oiling
side drive so you need an offset rear axle (I'm running an eaton cuz it's as big and burly as a 14 bolt and a forged housing not cast thus more easily weldable)
you probably need to change it from full time 4x4 to part time
(these parts are available-aproxximately $300 to $400)
if you change it to part time you lose the option of front wheel drive only (here is where the atlas wins)
you need to buy a few metric wrench's to work on it
(unless you already own a toyota)

so not to bash the atlas, it's a great case, but there are options out there, so look around

there is a shop opening soon in pasa robles by a friend of mine that knows these cases like no-one else
I will pass on any info about it when I learn more

If you have all that other shit(your sig), why do you need 4 to 1 in the 300?

Just make up your mind!!!!! You remind me of having to shop with my wife, going on and on about how great something is, then deciding to buying something different. Why give you advice? You obviously need to decide for yourself, or just go back and reread that thread on the all the novak parts you talked about. You were already "adviced" about 300 vs. altas.

Buy the Atlas (or don't) :flipoff2:

LT230 with the over and underdrive and part time conversion will be the thing to have.

Even w/o the extras it is a bomber case and can be found for a few hundred used.

The other thing about an LT230 is the rear output is WAY below the centerline of the case so your rear DS angle looks a lot better than some others. Just need to get you an Eaton or offset D70 out of an E350 and you are golden.

There are some people like fcfred running them behind domestic trannies and we are seeing more all the time. Strange rover just got an NP435 so he will be on it soon (knowing him he will be done in a week or two :))
