HI
I have a 65 fj40 that I am going to change from 3 speed
to a 75 4 speed trans and keep the 3 speed transfer case.
Has any one here done this swap and if so what did you use
for drive shafts. I read that I can use parts from 3 and 4 speed shafts to make it work without cutting them. My question is, if this can be done which parts from which shafts do I use?
thanks
Dennis

I don't know of an easy or cheap way of adapting the 4 speed tranny with the 3 speed t-case since the 75 tranny should have 16 splines and not 10 splines like the earlier ones. You may have to swap out the input gear in the t-case for a 10 spline unit. You may be better off swapping in the 4 speed t-case as well if you are going to stay with the Toyota tranny. A SM420 swap would be a better swap for crawling and you can keep your 3 speed t-case.

You can use 4 speed drive shafts and 3rd member 4 speed pinion flanges from 75-78. You keep the 3 speed slip yoke end that goes to the transfer case. The 4speed swap is easiest if you swap everything from the bellhousing to drive shafts from a 4 speed cruiser.

You might consider doing a sm420 swap as the cost and effort is a push and the 420 may be more useful if you wheel your cruiser.

65 might be the earlier style t-case that will not even bolt to a later 3 spd tranny.

I have one in the shed and the mating surface between the t-case and tranny is not the same as all other cruzer stuff i have.

You may want to check this....

thanks for the info. I am still trying to learn this cruiser stuff. The
reason I am going with the toy 4 speed is that I needed a eng
and bought a complete 73 f eng with the 4 speed trans already bolted to it. Now I am not so sure what I should do,maybe just
hook it up to the stock 3 speed. Glad I am only in this a couple of hundred bucks.
thanks

You can mate the '65 t-case to the four speed. You will need a gear with the three speed gear teeth count and with the 16 spline input. I have a new one someone was supposed to buy but did not ever send the cash...Let me email him and I can see if he wants it. If not it's yours for $75+ shipping...

thanks for the info and the offer on the gear but I got the gear
with the trans. I was told that I will need a bearing and a pto spacer to hook it up to the 4 speed.
thanks
