I am trying to find a replacment transfer case for my 2001 Jeep Cherokee, with a manual transmission. And 4.0 Engine. If my current transcase is an NP231, can I use any NP231 off any jeep. Or do I need to use only xj np231, and does year effect it at all as well? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Google search what tranny you have and the input spline count. Then you will be able to get a np231 with the same spline input. There are 21 and 23 jeep, and 27 chevy. Everything in your post should give you the answer.

you should have the 23spline input, look for a 94-01XJ 231J. any 231J will work if you swap in a 23spline input. or use the 231C guts in the 231J case (keep your input and output, use the chevy chain and sprockets)

good luck

in some models the input shaft length is different, watch out for this too
