Since you guys deal with this everyday, I thought I would turn to you guys for help. We are currently trying to open a 4wd, bicycling, & hiking park south of kansas city. We went before the planning and zoning commision ealier this week and we were reccomended for denial of the permit. We go before the County Commisioners on June 3rd to try to get the actual permit. We have invested thousands of hours of time into making this park happen and we have been approved for a land grant from the parks and wildlife and the highway dept. (If that tells you the hoops we have already jumped through.) How ever we have come to our greatest challange yet. We are opposed by the older people of the community which are mainly farmers. Who are VERY closed minded and oppose any change at all. ( you know the type) We went in with a very good presentation only to be over ran by the people at the meeting. The planning board did nothing to stop interuptions and objections, we hope the county commisioners meeting will be better ran. Anyways this is a letter I recieved for a request to show support for the park and maybe sway the commisioners into thinking we are not going to destroy thier land and will be good neighbors. Any suggestions you guys might have I would appreaciate it. E-mail me or responed here with suggestions. You guys are the most well versed on land issues and we really could use some of your assistance.

Thanks in advance, Jake Good

"BOD,
We need your help! We need to get letters of support to the Linn County Zoning Commission before June 3rd. This is to support the Kansas Rocks Recreation Park being developed by the Kansas City 4WD Association near Mound City, Ks. The letters can be from anyone who is involved or has knowledge of rock crawling, mountain biking or hiking as a sport. The letters should cover such topics as:

1. Speed of vehicles on the property.
2. Type of people involved in these sports.
3. Impact on wildlife
4. Impact on water (oil and gas leakage in streams)
5. Trespassing on neighboring lands.
6. Family orientation
7. Concerns over trash
8. Respect for the environment.

We were shut out by the planning commission and they will recemmend denial of a use permit to open the park to the county commissioners. We need all the letters and support we can get in their hands by June 3rd. We will appear in front of the commissioners to present our case again for final decision. PLEASE HELP THE 4WD COMMUNTIY.

Send your letters to:

Andy Mayhugh
Linn County Zoning Administrator
P.O. Box 350. 306 Main
Mound City, KS 66056-0350

Thank you!

David Killion

I see since it's not in cali nobody really cares. I have sent letters to help your causes out there even though I may never make it to your awesome trails, and I will continue to do so.
Thanks, to anyone that can offer support to this. Jake

Don't come over to my forum and try to stir up shit with this "nobody cares because it's not Cali" crap. We do care, and we are helping. Some people have already sent letters. We're on the same team here and I will NOT tolereate any CRAP in this forum...

With that said, my letter's going out today...I've beeen working all week and haven't had a chance to post...don't worry we're helping :)

Did anyone post this on the LUN yet?

Also the topics you need coverered in the letter are pretty specific, most people may not be able to "credibly" or "accurately" write about them....will a general support letter for the creation of the OHV area help also?? more people may feel comfortable writing that type of letter...

Naw I just said that to stir stuff up! :D :D :D
Yeah the topics listed were just a guide, If you are able to comment on any of the topics that is fine if not a general letter up support is cool too!

We have a had a good show of support from the 4 wheelin community and we are very appreaciative of that. Keep up all the great work guys and thank you! Jake Good

EDIT: don't know if it has been posted on LUN or not.

yellow sub,
I wanted to ask your opinion on this subject. We are trying to figure out a scheme for the next meeting are there anytactics you guys have had sucess with local government? Should we have many people show up and show our support or try to keep it quiet and address this on our own as a board? Any other suggestions you might have that is useful in this type of situation? Thanks for your help and your letter.

PS if any of you have a generic letter that you have sent to other governments or organizations in support of 4wheelin those would also be a great asset to have show up in the county commisioners hands.

Thanks, Jake
