From the home page bulletin link, scroll down past "newbie 4x4 discussions", to "toyota truck and 4runner talk". Then read the FAQ's. Maybe this can help, beware of asking question's without reading the FAQ's 10 times.... I'm Drunk again !!! YEEHAW!!!!!

The early Toyota auto trannies had integrated transfer cases with chain drive gears. You cannot put lower gears in or make a dual setup as it is. There are now 2 or 3 options, the best known being the Inchworm setup. Unfortunately, it's the only way to put a crawler on the auto.
Now, the later (96 and up) trannies had a separate transfer case that could be removed, and several adapters are around to put standard transfer cases on them.
I crawled an auto tranny for years, as a mild wheeler it's fine as-is. Lower diff gears with bigger tires and your fine.
You have to practice your search skills because this subject is very well discussed in the FAQ and the Toy forum.
