Weld it shut!!!! How often do you open it? Why do you need to open it? Reach over and grab what you need.

I had no problem welding mine.

welding shut.

My dogs would not appreciate that and loading and unloading lots of heavy objects (something I do a lot) would suck...

Try some gate hinges for rod iron gates. That is what some use for swing away tires carriers. This one utilizes two 600lb/ea ball-bearing style gate hinges with grease zirks...from Wheelers.

On my first Samurai I had the tailgate fall off.

First order of business would be to get the spare tire off the tailgate. Put it inside or on a swing-away tire carrier.

To fix my tailgate at that time I covered the whole thing in thick diamond plate. Just spaced the hinges out from the body and then bolted the hinge straight thru the diamond plate.

Or, just buy another tailgate a different color and diamond plate it.

Or weld it shut :)

Well if you are going to play English teacher....then no... "Wrought Iron" is a type of metal like D2 or 4140 steel and for most practical purposes does not exists anymore. It had an iron silicate additive.
