: low pinion 60 in a 75-79 ford?
johny5 01-29-2007, 08:30 PM i found an old pu in a feild, it has a drivers drop low pinion 60 in it. my question is did these truck come factory with a low pinion 60?
i have heard of hi pinion in these trucks but not anything about low pinions
IROK Cherokee 01-29-2007, 08:37 PM Yup, it even has closed knuckles. Not a desirable front axle.
johny5 01-29-2007, 08:49 PM i'll have to go back and take another look but i thought that it had open knuckels , i thought i saw the axel shaft u joints
u2slow 01-29-2007, 08:53 PM 76-77 is open knuckle low pinion. They have 30spline axles and 1350 joints. Its crewcab only - unless its been swapped.
If it's low pinion, open knuckle with big hubs, it could also be an HD44. Pretty common 75 - 77.
IROK Cherokee 01-29-2007, 08:56 PM If it has open knuckles, it's probably a 44. Anyway, Ford stopped the low pinion in 76 (3/4 ton) from 77 on all were hi pinion.
johny5 01-29-2007, 09:24 PM thanks guys, if i can get it cheap enough i might pick it up
its defantly a king pin 60. i just thought i was strange that it was a low pinion in a early ford . its a reg cab with a 205 tcase im guessing the rear diff is a 60(didnt look at it)
I think they were in 250s regular cabs that came with the 'snow fighter' package.. eg higher GVWR front end for a snow plow. I have a couple of these axles but I haven't run them yet. I did a lot of research at one time and found the strength was right between a d44 HD and a d60 HP.
Danger_Ranger18 01-29-2007, 10:31 PM The snow fighter was 78 79 only and they were hp 60s
u2slow 01-29-2007, 10:42 PM 'SnowFighter' started in '78 and runs through into the 90s - according to Dana :p
It defines a higher GAWR for the front end. It is not an axle-specific designation.

Johny, Take some pictures and I'll let you know the year of the axle.
Also look for the BOM on the tube.
I need 76-77 LP Dana 60 fronts for my web page.
its defantly a king pin 60. Can you get me pictures?
The more the better!
I can get you pictures Mr N. I have one in my crew cab... it's too bad too cause I even pulled it all apart and had a D44 HD around to compare it to.

Sending PM. Thanks
If the hubs look like this, it's an HD44

All that says is external hubs and 8-lug. That can be a D44 or LP60, open or closed knuckle.
What defines an HD44 is the 5-86x axle joints.
