: Jeep: stock gas tank into tub? Why not?

I was thinking again ... I want to get my gas tank out from under my YJ. But I'm a cheap bastard and don't want to spring for a fuel cell. After breaking out the trusty tape measure, it appears the stock YJ gas tank will fit perfectly into my tub, where my spare is currently mounted.

Any reason not to do this?

I plan to cover the top of the tub with sheet steel, brace it and mount my spare up there. I will likely drill it out and route the filler neck through this as well, after shortening it. I'll attach the tank to the tub using the same straps that currently hold it in please and I'll also create a vertical piece of sheet steel (under the larger top piece) to isolate the tank completely from the rest of the interior.

Anything I'm missing? Thoughts? Concerns? This is a trailered rig and I've got plenty of capacity in the current tank, so no worries there. Any input welcome.

i am in the middle of doing that myself but i was a dumb ass and through away my old gas tank skid plate. another thought is if you turn it where the filler neck is on the pass side. you could mount the filler neck to the roll cage. just a thought

Dion,

I think BadAssJeepGuy did this with his TJ. Might try PMing him.

H8Monday did something similar to this (I think :D ) except he cut his floor out and raised the tank. Covered it with sheetmetal and is able to run a rear seat.

FatCity. Whatever.
I like your input into how it would, or wouldn't work. Got input? I'd like to hear it, I'm sure a high roller fab god like yourself knows this shit inside and out.

Your right, I appoligize.
The question was why not?
but the answer is still, because it's half ass.

second reason: I often question the home brew fab work that rolls out of the garage (and amazed it rolled that far)via this web site, it is all to often done less than perfect, and on a budget of less than $45. Another $200 spent on this gentlmens project and it will not only be done correctly, but also have a proffesional look about it.

Not trying to be a dick, but let's have some respect for the vehicle also.

Dude get a Cell. only way to go I was thinking of doing something simliar to H8 mondays but I still wanted to leave my tub floor...So i got a cell doesnt take up that much room and it looks killer, you want a stock gas tank in your tub...Thats really half assed, that will look really gay unless you do what H8 did... Save some bucks, go to your spot in the train station bathroom , do the old paper bag shuffle no one will know and make some cash. And buy a fawking Cell cheap bastard

Hmmm. I asked for any input and I guess that's what I got. If you read my initial post carefully, you'll note my proposal is to completely compartmentalize the entire thing. The wheelwells on each side, tailgate in back, completely covered by a deck lid on top with a vertical sheet in front. The tank will take up approx. 50 percent of the available space in the tub, a space that's currently 100 percent occupied by my spare.

In other words, for those who didn't read that far ... you won't be able to see it.

My real concern, though perhaps I didn't make that clear, was the safety factor and other unseen venting issues that I might not have considered. Given the scenario I outlined, is a fuel cell really any better?

Note again for the reading impaired ... you will not be able to see the tank when I'm finished. With that out of the way, does anyone else have input as to the safety/feasibility of this? Thanks.

eric, i can appreciate what your saying.... i used a tuffy security box and dropped my tank in it.....you would never know its there.... i have a few things gonna be changed here shortly, and a custom fuel cell will be built to accomidate the changes, also making room for more storage.....

there are quite a few fabricators out there who dont own a shop.... just in case you didnt know.... :D

lol you say professional look.... :D with my crappy set up people still voted my rig best lookin (or some wording like that) before the erroc comp.... :D

blatant....... i dont see a reason why you cant do it.... the tuffy box just made it real easy.....

I can't see too many reasons not to do it, if you are decking the back anyways you'll never see it, I would suggest cutting holes in the original floor though, you don't want the tank in a sealed area just incase it leaks, gotta leave some ventilation for the fumes and all.
I agree with the doing it right thing but lets be realistic shall we, for only a few hundred more you can mount a fuel cell, for only a few hundred more you can have a nice fabricated cover for the back, for only..... ever add up all those few hundred mores? I tried doing everything right and spending the extra cash, thats why I'm sitting here in front of my computer instead of wheeling, I can't afford driveshafts yet!

I think the actual award was Cleanest Presentation/Construction. So yeah I gues it definitely didn't have a proffesional look about it

I used my stock tank.
The install looks fine to me.
It solid, well protected works well on angles, doesnt leak (even upside down), and it cost me nothing but time.
The plastic YJ tanks are a very viable option.

Eric, We're not talking rocket science here.

I did read your original post Blatant and can see no problems with your idea. Its been done before.

He said into the tub, not onto the tub. Correct me if I'm wrong but I see this statement meaning he is going to open the floor up and have the top halve of the tank inside the new enclosure he is building and the bottom halve of the tank still outside/under the tub, yet above the bottom of the frame.

Things to watch for when you make the opening in the floor board. If you hack up the factory hat channels make sure to repair them. They are the structure of the tub especially the very rear one (under the tail gate opening). If you're still running all the emission stuff i.e. the vapor seporator in the driver side wheel well you may have to change the mounting and orientation of this apparatos so you don't fill it with fuel when off camber. Possibly turn it 180* so the nipples are on top???

With plans to remount your spare on top of your new tin work I'd have a couple hat channels made at your local sheet metal shop to re inforce the top.

oh man does that look half assed! that is one clean install. i dont see much difference in the well installed tank vs. cell. i bought a cell because i'm half assed and wouldn't take the time to do it right.:D

I tossed my stock tank in the back until I can make/have made a custom one to fit above my driveshaft, between my upper links. It works great, is not going to get hit by a rock, and is safer than when it was under the Jeep. If I was leaving it there permanantly I would buy a fuel cell, but putting the tank in the tub works just fine, are you building a show rig?

In the TOTW thread someone asked if fuel cells are smog legal in CA, but it never got answered. Anyone have any info?

I only had to raise my floor about 80mm to give me all the clearance that I needed down below.

I got three hat sections spot welded onto it, as per the original and the rear seat will still fit if I want it to. Had to move the rear x-member but that was no big deal really, once I got into it.
