: 91 Dodge w/Cummins for free, what's it got?

I just lucked into a '91 Dodge p/u w/ a Cummins and a 5 speed. I assume that the tranny is an NV4500 but I've heard that some other trannys were also used. Also, what X case am I likely to find? I know m dads '01 had the 242 hd (at least I'm pretty sure it does). As best I recall it has a FF 60 rear but I don't remember which front axle it has.

Thanks in advance, as you can tell I don't have it in my possesion as of yet but I should be picking it up this weekend. Drive train wise it's in good shape with just over 200k on the clock but the body and frame are pretty tired.

I'll be using the drivetrain in another vehicle (FJ60 if I can get it all to fit without being so nose heavy that it looks like a stink bug). I'm sure that's a sin on this board but to each his own. :flipoff2:

I'm thinking it should be getrag and 205, but i been wrong before.

Getrag transmission, NP205 x-case, D70 rear and D60 front. I'd be wary of that transmission, it's ruined more than a few people's day.

Fear Factory is right. That's the equipment it would have had from the factory at least. So far, my Getrag is OK at 125K, but many have not held up to the Cummins torque. Change the trans oil and replace with 5W30 synthetic. Some guys overfill the trans thru the shifter hole to help lube the upper bearings better. Do not use gear oil, like 80/90W!. This has lead to some of the Getrag failures. Good luck fitting that into the FJ!

Thanks guys. I know it's gonna be a tight fit but I'm going SOA so I should clear the oil pan. Weight is a different subject. It's the original tranny and has been going strong behind the cummins for 200k. Any value on the getrag as I'll swap in an NV4500 and don't need more boat anchors in the shop. Any thoughts on a doubler or reduction box for between the 4500 and the 205? I don't wanna spend the $ for a Klune and I really don't like their cable shifter. I know, search... :D

length is also going to be a factor..The Cummins is 38 inches long from the rear of the head to the front of the fan.. Width is 28 inches from the outside of the turbocharger to the outside of the intake manifold..Height is 34 inches from the bottom of the oilpan to the top of the intake manifold inlet..The weight of the Cummins is about 950 lbs which is about twice what your current engine weighs.. To do this swap properly you will need a heavier duty frame, heavier duty springs, dana 60's front and rear minimum..

Thanks for the measurements hy_desert, they're gonna come in handy. I'd planned on boxing the frame (at least 1/2 of it), and will be running the 60 front and 70 rear. The Cummins is about 400lbs heavier than the stock engine so I'll be looking to lighten the front somewhat to compensate for it.

Are there any ways to lighten the Cummins 5.9 up?

There really is no way to lighten the 5.9 but what you may try is to trade the 5.9 for a 3.9 4 cylinder.. with a little massaging the 3.9 can be made to put out over 500ft lbs torque in turbo form..

It's been done before.

I have pictures of a 60 with a 6bt and an nv4500 around here somewhere. I'll try to dig them up.

This guy used the factory radiator with a 4 core recore, and all he had to do was move the rad/ac condensor forward a little. He built a custom grill that bubbled out a few inches, looked very factory when it was done.

I agree with the "ace the getrag" crowd. As far as the weight goes, don't worry too much, it's comparable to droppin' a winch on the front of a stock 60.

And don't forget the in stock trim the '91 stock 6b is a slug. It has awesome potential, but stock, it's about as powerfull as a GM 6.2l
