I'mlooking at getting a F250 soon and found a nice one but it's a 6-speed manual. It'll be driven daily in town and towing my toyota on the weekends, are these trannies nice and easy to use or are they like a dump truck tranny. I havn't got to test drive the truck otherwise I'd already know and won't have a chance to until next weekend. thanks in advance.

one quick question, do you even use the 1st gear when driving around town, is it like a granny gear. Also how long do they usually last. 200K 300K or??? thanks.

They are nice...I love mine. It did take a bit of getting used to though...to get to reverse and low you have to go through two gates, but it is no big deal...just different than the granny four speed that I had been driving.

The only thing that I have thought about doing to it is going to synthetic oil. when it is cold, somethimes it is a little reluctant to go into a gear. Nothing major, but I think synthetic oil would probably take care of that.

I don't use the granny unless I'm pulling or just need to go slow...I believe it is even marked "L" for low on the shifter. Around town, no need for it.

I drive the zf 6 speed every day. never use low unless I have a trailer on he back with the bronco on it. 1st thru OD is a breeze in mine. The stock ford clutch is the weak link in these trannys.

I wish I had the ZF6. Not a fan of how the 4R100 auto shifts at all.

I have the 6 speed in mine and it kicks ass. You will get better milage and the manual trucks came with a little more power than the autos. You can use the "L" for creeping in slow traffic or use 4LO-L to be used kind of like a doubler.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to test drive it this weekend and i'll be working the clutch to see how it is. it was replaced 30K ago by ford but not sure how good it still is. The truck has 217K on it now from towing horse stuff from TX to CA, do these trannies go out or jsut the clutches. Thanks.
