: Head Identification
84MSRB 02-03-2007, 05:03 AM Can anyone identify the year of these heads? There's a 69 block under them and a 93 EFI on top of them.

masterbeavis 02-03-2007, 01:56 PM 5.0/5.8 you have to pull the intake and look for the casting number on the bottom side of the head. Older heads will also have 289/302/351 cast into the underside of them, on the intake valley portion. There is also a code cast into the top of the head, but I dont have any info on how to decode that.

84MSRB 02-03-2007, 02:13 PM Well that sucks.
masterbeavis 02-03-2007, 02:20 PM Out of curiosity, why do you need to know anyways? If it has an 18MM spark plug, it is a head from a '74 and older, 14MM is 75 and up (applies to SBF)
I just found out in one of my books that the second pic IS the date code. 3 H 27 is the date code, _3 aug 27. Head casting is an '87, so that head was cast on Aug 27 1993. first letter is the last number of the year, the letter is the month, and the last didgit(s) are the day
84MSRB 02-03-2007, 04:10 PM Well, that still sucks.
OK, I've placed this motor in an 84 CJ7. That has turned into a real adventure. I bought it after seeing it run, thinking it was a whole 93 5.0 motor. Oops. I did the SBF swap after reading on here and many other forums that it was easier than the SBC deal. Now I've got a buddy that did it too, and he's having one hell of a time getting headers to fit. That's all.
Oh- I do have the bigger spark plugs, but I'm metrically challenged.
masterbeavis 02-03-2007, 04:23 PM 14MM=9/16. 18MM=11/16 OR 3/4(I thinK)
As far as headers are concerned, the only issue I would assume you would have is if you were to mistake a 302 for a 351,(taller deck height) or you got heads off of a '97 and up explorer, that were GT40P, with a funny spark plug angle.

Actually the plug head size is 5/8 for the 14 mm, and 13/16 for the 18 mm.

I think he was descibing the size of the threaded portion by converting it to a close Imperial measure.
14mm is a blonde one from 9/16"
masterbeavis 02-03-2007, 08:35 PM yes, im talkin bout the threads, not the size socket to take off the spark plug.
fullerthrottle 02-04-2007, 09:08 AM is there an advantage or dissadvantage to using a gt40 or gt40p heads..
like header interchange or combustion domes???

X 2. And whats the deal with E7TE heads, I've seen them mentioned several times?
masterbeavis 02-04-2007, 11:45 AM GT40P's are supposedly better heads than the early heads. Better port design, larger valves, more direct spark, better emissions, etc etc. See my pic I linked of the P vs non P head, the spark plug angle is different, causing header issues.
I dont know if anything at all is special about the E7TE heads, except slightly smaller combustion chambers, by 7 CC or so.
84MSRB 02-04-2007, 01:47 PM Well, I can tell from that one shot I don't have P heads. Will I have any issues finding headers- since I'm not sure of the year make- or were the other heads relatively unchanged as far as headers are concerned?
82F100SWB 02-04-2007, 04:22 PM For stock heads, pretty much everything other than the P heads have the same flange/port/plug placement, so, headers won't be an issue.
VerticalTRX 02-04-2007, 05:24 PM Based on the exhaust ports those look like E7TE's to me (which would be the OEM head for the '93 EFI). For ordering headers it shouldn't make any difference what year they are.
