I've got an old (probably older than me) battery charger (still works fine) but the ammeter took a dump.
Wondering if anyone knows where I might find a dual voltage (6v and 12v) ammeter that reads high enough to use on a battery charger (somewhere near 60amps)

You can use an external meter:

100A meter ($12) on pg2, 100A (50mV) shunt ($13.50) on pg3.

If the crapped-out 60A meter uses a 50mV scale I'd just get the 30A meter and write over the scale on its face, replacing 10 with 20, etc, and wire it in place of the old meter. The meter is basically just a little voltmeter that reads voltage drop across a resistor (the shunt), and since your charger works the shunt is probably intact.

The external meter route would be easiest if the parts aren't labeled with a scale (ie 50mV=60A), and they probably aren't.

Edit: I just took a peek inside my recent-manufacture 6A 6V/12V charger and it doesn't have a separate shunt- it runs the full 6A through the meter. I doubt a 60A charger does it that way, though.

well, I kind of bypassed the meter (connected the 2 wires together) to make it work while I look for a replacement.
