: Bought some dimple dies, now I'm addicted
Butler 02-03-2007, 09:49 PM CAn't stop...
First I made a dedicated press that fits on my table top out of stuff I had lying around, it will handle a 2" in 1/8' without flexing
286017
Then I got started on the buggy, my goal is to lose twenty pounds, think I can do it?
286018
Needed a shelf with a nice sound edge to keep the plasma from falling off. I'm going to weld a strap over the top to keep it there in the event of an earthquake.
286019
Then I decided I needed a smaller, lighter welding cart, have i gone too far?:D

Jeepermat 02-03-2007, 10:33 PM No, you have not
Pinerog 02-03-2007, 10:40 PM Keep it up! And keep the pics coming:D
Twisted Minis 02-03-2007, 10:48 PM Man, that is awesome.
You have any pictures of the dies? I don't think I've seen them. Whered you get them?
FoxinBox 02-03-2007, 11:25 PM how much did you pay for the die and where at?
Butler 02-03-2007, 11:29 PM Bought them from Keithflux here on the board. They are made by Light racing.3/4",1", and 1 1/2". Don''t think I'll ever use anything bigger than that.

loveshackle 02-03-2007, 11:48 PM Sweet! I've been looking at a set from Trick-Tools. You're certainly encouraging me. Nice stuff!
Todd W 02-04-2007, 12:18 AM Dimple Die = Fun
Holesaw = No fun
Unless you are lucky enough to have a punch :smokin:
Wanted a LIGHT weight plasma cart so I could still pick it up with the cart bolted to it. Sides are 16 gauge and the square tube is like .065 wall. Only have to add a hanger for the cord ands and its done(wheels werent welded on in the pic but they are now and are probably the heaviest part)

The dimples look sweet, keep on punching.:D
Could you please post a picture of it in action? Does the bigger part of the die go on the bottom?
How thick of material can it do? Does it do up to 1/8th?
Thanks,
WW
Butler 02-04-2007, 09:25 AM 286051
You put the plate between them depending on which way you want the dimple to go. Pretty easy. Oh and Todd, drill press+sharp saw+super slow speed=super fast cuts.:smokin:
Edit:yes, the are rated to 1/8" in mild steel and .095 in chrome moly. If you read around, after 1/8" they are not supposed to be worth much structurally.
Double edit-Todd W's coupon+sale=12 ton jack for five dollars. Thanks Todd!

cool! i had been thinking in my head about making a dedicated dimple die press. i wanted to make it single sided like yours to allow larger pieces that would not fit between the vertical rails on a standard press.
TeenyCAR 02-04-2007, 09:50 AM Bought them from Keithflux here on the board. They are made by Light racing.3/4",1", and 1 1/2". Don''t think I'll ever use anything bigger than that.

That's what you think now. Order up some bigger ones and you'll use them for sure! Shoot I'm going to make a 4 and 5 incher!
AthlonAJ 02-04-2007, 10:02 AM Hey for cutting the holes there are some other options than a holesaw. I've been gathering up several different types this past week to do a comparison. I'll snap a bunch of pics, maybe even video and post it all up!
Bruce T 02-04-2007, 10:02 AM will cnc plasma cut holes work? or will it tear? I know laser or water cut works but never heard if cnc plasma would. I need those.
Im diggin the press too. Ive had peices that just barely fit inbetween the sides of the press. BTW, I have the same set of dies and have done 10 gauge(.134) it deforms the material a little more than thinner sheet but you can get it close to normal by pressing it back flat with the bigger die.
And Butler, to lose 20 pounds off that thing, you are going to need A LOT more holes.
Butler 02-04-2007, 11:18 AM Im diggin the press too. Ive had peices that just barely fit inbetween the sides of the press.I wanted to be able to make holes in the middle of a sheet. I think I can go up to eight inches in. That might not sound like much but I have a total of 6 dollars invested in that press. It does flex at the upright even thought it is 2"x3" 3/8" wall. But not enough to make me worry. you are going to need A LOT more holes.:smokin: :smokin: :smokin:
I'm changing a few things preparing it to be sold. When I first built it, I didn't have enough experince in fab so if it required 1/4" I used 1/2". So I'm making what I can a lot thinner and what I can't I'm making a lot of holes in.
MOSS2 02-04-2007, 11:21 AM will cnc plasma cut holes work? or will it tear? I know laser or water cut works but never heard if cnc plasma would. I need those.
Im sure it would work but the little bits of hardened slag left behind by the plasma may wear or gouge your dies a bit.
Bruce T 02-04-2007, 12:36 PM Im sure it would work but the little bits of hardened slag left behind by the plasma may wear or gouge your dies a bit.
I always clean up the work before using. I've had a tiny peice get by me once and it scored the cnc press break I was using. Not cool but it was a tiny nick.
Erik D_lux 02-05-2007, 05:36 AM I caught the bug too!

JeepinDoug 02-05-2007, 06:24 PM Fawk Butler!!! The benchtop press is brilliant.
The damn full size press sucks for me but now I'll have a benchtop done by the weekend.
Holesawing the tin is simple, I cut my tin to size, drill 1/4" holes wherever I will hole saw and screw the tin to a 2" x 6" pece of wood.
Butler 02-05-2007, 06:32 PM Butler!!! The benchtop press is brilliant.yes, well I have flashes of brilliance followed by lots of stupidity.Just so you know, that is 1/2" plate on the bottom and the round is 2" solid. All the braces are 1/4" I have some extra 2" but it probably wouldn't be worth the shipping.
Grayguy 02-05-2007, 07:11 PM I really want one of these things. Looks awesome. I dont' really have a use for it though...How much do the dies cost?

Keith sells them individually or in sets.
GREAT Vendor
One Big Zuk 02-06-2007, 07:47 AM I just got a set at the off-road impact show. I love them. My ? is how much stronger does it Make say 1/8 steel. Is there a number rateing for it. I could not find a hole lot on it. Thanks Ryan
jmhinescj 02-06-2007, 08:37 AM which of the three that you bought do you find yourself using most? I was thinkin about getting a set but I don't think I need more than 1 size for now...I was thinkin about either 1.5 or 2
Not surprised at all that you had good luck with Kieth...he's one of the best vendors Iv'e had the pleasure of dealing with.

There's not enough bandwidth here...:(
Beat95YJ 02-06-2007, 09:19 PM I love mine. I used them on a display for Off Road Expo, and now I look at everything and think, yeah thats cool, but it needs dimples.
devinsixtyseven 02-08-2007, 09:18 AM I too must see if I possess this power :D.
Great work on the press :grinpimp: . One more thing to add to the welding table I'm making!
...All I need to know I learned from the PBB :p...

Dimple dies do not make a piece of metal stronger, only stiffer, and the stiffness is a function of the patterns of holes you make in the metal. Strength (usually measured in psi) is a material property and can only be altered by chemical change.
300sniper 02-09-2007, 07:16 AM what size jack/press would be needed for a 3" diameter flare in 10 gauge?
SHERPA 02-11-2007, 04:12 PM seeing as how I've got a 95 ton scotchman ironworker, and seeing how I'm
also obsesive compulsive in designing stuff, I recently drilled 210 1 1/2" holes
in some aluminum bleacher-seat material extrusion I'm using for trailer bunks,
and then needed to dimple all those holes, I used the iron worker with a
short drift to dimple all the holes........ after setting up the travel-limit switch, the foot switch is very, very nice to have.......
210 completely seperate holes all done in less than 1 hour complete.......
--I have a dimple die problem...........

Butler 02-11-2007, 08:28 PM pics?
SWAG MFG 02-14-2007, 08:49 AM That is a nice press, built one myself, primarly used as a poor man's press brake.
:smokin:
Butler 02-14-2007, 09:39 AM That is sweet. I'm going to have to rig something up like that. I added some springs and a top plate for a return this weekend. I'll get the pics up later

You have a 95T ironworker and youdrilled holes?
Nice press brake, SWAG!
Freshman 02-18-2007, 04:42 PM does anybody know of a stand alone hole punch you can put in a press. I know they hane breaks but I dont know about punches.
Just a thought
SHERPA 02-18-2007, 04:57 PM You have a 95T ironworker and youdrilled holes?
Nice press brake, SWAG!
trust me, if I had an 1 1/2" hole punch I certainly would have used it........
scotchman punches only go up to 1 1/4"...........
--Sherpa
MT4Runner 02-19-2007, 07:48 AM Wow! I assumed at 95T, you could do damn near anything you wanted....I'd have guessed it went to 2".
Buy a 1.25" dimple die! :D
(This is all posted out of sincere Scotchman jealousy)
SHERPA 02-19-2007, 03:37 PM the punch "ram" has a threaded end.........you install a very large "nut" that
more resembles a tubing-type "cap" with the center top hole in it....... the
male punch die has a flange on it with is captured under this "cap" and
tightened up on the ram....... the ram diameter/thread is about 2.00" round.
I suppose you could have custom dies made for a larger hole size, and scotchman might even make them stock, but I've got a 40 piece punch set
already and not much need for much bigger........ if I did much work like
this, I would buy an Amada sheet metal punch station and dies for that.
The ironworker actually doesn't get used that much, but is invaluable for
the stuff it can do....... mine has the following tooling:
30" press brake....... (this isn't even made anymore, they only sell a 24" now.)
rod shear up to 1 1/4 bar.
angle shear up to 6" angle x .500 thick.
24" plate shear
and 95 ton punch station. the most work this sees is multiple same-size
hole punching, and press brake bending for plate........
--I got mine used, for a relatively decent price.
