: Serious cj7 brake light problem
MudBoggingJunkie 02-04-2007, 07:33 AM Ok, I know this isnt a fun offroading question but having no rear brake lights on this cj7 is keeping it parked in the drive way, and thats no place for a jeep!
Problem: no brake lights
But what!!! rear driving tail lights, turn lights, and hazards works.
It gets even more tricky.... brake lights work when the hazards or the rear turns lights are activated and you step on the brake.
I checked the fuses "swaped them around" and the switch on the brake pedal "even bought a new one", they are fine. The lights worked the other week so I'm not sure whats going on.
Could it be the turn lever stuff inside the steering wheel?
Any help would be great.
Jeepermat 02-04-2007, 08:14 AM Oh this is sooo hard core.
There is a newb section, try there.
To add the tech, yes it is most likely "the turn lever stuff inside the steering wheel"
guidolyons 02-04-2007, 11:09 AM wow

Did you check the bulbs? There are 2 filaments, one for parking/turn and another for the brake light. I'm sure theres no problem with 20+ year old wiring
Lumpy Grits 02-04-2007, 11:25 AM Hi MBJ :) , the turn sig. lever and controls are were "I" have had the most problems with brake lights :D . But don't forget the brake light switch itself, I have had 2 of them go bad over the years
Best of luck,
Lumpy Grits

Is the wire going to the tail lamp for the brakes hot when the brakes are on? If it is-then your bulb or lamp assembly is bad/corroded. Those tail light assemblies are cheap.
If the wire is not getting voltage-then check your switch under the dash off your brake pedal.
Do the front brake lights work?:flipoff2:
JeeperDon 02-05-2007, 03:40 AM I'd say it's the hazzard switch. It's not resetting to the non-hazzard more right, bad contact(s).

The newbie name implies minimal experience, but in what is not specified. The hardcore one implies much experience, but in what is not specified either. Any question someone does not know the answer too should be welcome anywhere and not deemed too minimal for your lofty experience. Al Einstein, clearly hardcore in his field, occasionally asked where the toilet paper was.
72cj5 02-05-2007, 09:41 AM check the wire connection and pressure switch for the lights on the bottom of the brake master cylinder.

Look this is basic automotive electrical crap that has no business anywhere near "hardcore". If you don't have a clue about basic electrical then you are a newbie and/or an idiot. Get a manual and figure out how to read a simple schematic. Then ask in the newbie section where it still barely belongs but maybe ya won’t get flamed over there. Yes I can be asshole, deal! :smokin:

LOL
MudBoggingJunkie 02-05-2007, 09:22 PM Thanks for the replies
I should have mentioned, There is 12 volts going to and coming from the brake pedal switch. And the relay/fuse for the hazards was good.
There is only an alternating 4-8 volts downstreem in the same wire that reads 12 volts leaving the brake pedal switch so the problem lies somewere in between, maybe in the column???
Probly just scrap this darn cj and focus on my 4Runner:)

If you don't have a clue about basic electrical then you are a newbie and/or an idiot.Yeah, way above your talents. Go have another beer and weld something. Throw in a few Tim Allen ape grunts too.
Before you leave for that beer though, define 'hardcore' for me. Do these items fit into 'newbie' or 'hardcore'?
>Questions on adding a York OBA system.
>Questions on installing an ARB yourself.
>Questions on putting in a cam on a old 304.

KeithC 02-06-2007, 04:50 AM Check the connector at the bottom of the harness that comes out of the column ..

Yes-that is another good thing to check-unplug the big flat connector and 2-3 other plugs-spray them with wd40/pb blaster and clean the terminals and reconnect.
