I pulled the SM465 and NP208 out of my 88 K5 Blazer so that I could swap in a different SM465 and NP205. When I pulled the flywheel, I noticed that the rear main seal was starting to leak. So I went and picked up a new one, but when I put it in I was able to push it in by hand. Is this normal? I have never had a seal go in as easy as this one. I don't want to get it all back together and have the damn thing leak. The manual didnt call for silicon around the outside of the seal, but now I'm thinking I should have put some on it. Anyone know about this? Thanks for any info.

Normally they are press in. If you were able to push it in by hand, sounds like the seal housing is worn or you have the wrong seal. I would say wrong seal...You can put locktite on the outside of the seal to keep it in place, but if you ever have to change the seal again, it's gonna be difficult. Since you have it all apart I would fix it right. It sucks to put it all together and still have it leak....
Where did you get the seal? If its a Kragen or Autozone part, it probably not the exact part. Better to go to Napa or the dealer.:skull:

I got it from Napa and it is exactly the same as the one that came out. It pressed in there by hand, but was pretty damn hard. The next step now I guess is to try and get it out without messing it up. I will probably try loctite, that sounds like it will work. I don't think I will have to replace it again before an engine rebuild. If I can't get it out without messing it up, I'll probably just leave it in there. Thanks again for the info.
