I'm sure most of you have seen this ad - the green '95 D-90 wagon driving on a dirt track with a rhino right on its heels. Its up in every Rover dealership I've ever been to, and by working at the successor ad agency, I've had the ability to get a pretty sweet copy for myself.

The rhino always looked fake to me. People told me it was real, but I never believed them. There is NO WAY that the client would today allow us to take such risks for an ad. Guess things were different back in '95.

I am sitting here looking at a picture of the rhino catching the Defender. Catching it hard.

It is pretty ironic that the ad discusses the "powerful" 3.9L V-8, and then to see the picture of the rhino tearing into the Defender!

I've still got the calander with that photo on my office wall. People are always surprised to learn that it's not a doctored photo. I've got a Land Rover Owner Mag. from that year with a sequence of the photos showing the rhino hitting the truck.

I've still got the calender too. I seem to remember reading an article about that shoot that mentioned the rhino's name and that it nudged the D90 denting the rear quarter.

Yea, I remember that well...The rino's name was "Tank"...They did about 6 takes of the shot, and on the last take Tank caught the spare tire and lifted the 90 off the ground.

Tank is used in movies and other "rino-required" photo shoots. The article stated that Tank loves to chase cars...Good boy!

The ad with the elephant and the white SW has to be a fake though right?
