: 4WD SM465 Input shaft question

Looking into doubling up some SM465's. Several posts found in the archives have noted setups that require the milling of the second SM465's input shaft to match the spline count of the first SM465's output housing. However trail fixes as a result of heavy right foot action might lead to high amounts of machine shop hours and costs.

So, I'm in the process of looking for a more cost effective solution. The one that comes to mind is setup a divorced Tranny to Tranny design. utilizing a 2WD SM465 as the first transmission (cheap, easy to come by, and I've got a couple laying around anyway) a connecting it with a 4WD SM465 mated to an NP205. The connection to the 2WD output is easy because it has a ujoint yoke, the input for the 4WD SM465 is the hard part.

Basically the question would be: Aside from milling (which I know can be done but the $275 price tag isn't to my liking quite yet)... Is there anything out there that might work to match the spline count on the input shaft of the 4WD SM465 to say a cut drive shaft housing for the output of the 2WD SM465? I know pilot bearings arn't designed for such use, but would stacking those bearings and then welding them solid into a drive shaft housing work?? I know, I know, I'm reaching, but I'd rather explore all options before going to the milling shop. If I found 3 or 4 burnt clutch plates and cut them to spec, mounting them inside a drive shaft that might work also... But there again I'm reaching. I've got several 2WD as well as 4WD SM465's lying around, so any ideas you guys might have in this respect I'll entertain and try. Seems like a cheap and possibly effective way of reducing your crawl ratio.

Thanks.

i know this has been discussed before, and the idea that i had was to just run a single 1310 U-joint betwwen the two. What you need to do is find out the O.D. on the input shaft. Then find a 1310 yoke (NP231 maybe...) that has the same, or slightly smaller O.D. Now just have the 10-spline part of the input shaft lopped off, and spline the blank part for the yoke. Run 1 u-joint in btwn the trannies. You will definitely needto build a sturdy xmember, and bolt the 2nd tranny in place securely...

I can get your 2nd input made for around $200. That will make it 1 3/8"x10 spline (same as your output). You supply the shafts. I have been running mine for 4 years. It has been through hell with NO problems. I am twin sticking the 205, so I have it out. I can take some pics of my input shaft if you are interested.

I'm personally more interested in a mated type of setup. thinking more of a custom input shaft that dosn't neck down outside the bearing like the stock ones do, anyone?

if he isnt, I AM INTERESTED in the pics

the divorced 2wdr tranny idea sounds STUPID, how long is your ride?

Toploader I am interested.Would like to see some pics.I have been thinking about how to do this.Did you just mill the input so it would use a stock coupler? Also how did you build you adapter?Did you keep the bearing retainer?Any info would be great!!!Blazin:rasta:

The input shaft uses the factory transmission to t-case coupler. I took some pics should get them developed today. Anybody with a red star want to post them?

Ride's long enough to support a divorce with a 7" mating zone and still have a nice rear drive shaft. Divorce setup is pure simplicity.. Nuke one tranny no problem. You wouldn't have to drop the entire driveline in order to fix the problem. A direct mating setup however you would. But according to Toploader it looks like a direct mating can take a beating and more. This is purely a trail truck that will get trailered where ever it needs to get. With that in mind you mean to tell me that you would try and break the piss out of stuff while your on the trail? I know the 14boltFF will handle it, front is questionable, but as soon as it nukes D60 is on the way. Do I break parts often? Yes.

What kind of engine is this dual setup behind? Will it handle a 383 w/ centerforce II clutch?

a red star is required to up load photos, you can still hyper link without the star.
email me or put them up on webshots or something

I am running a 408 cid small block chevy, 11:1, dart heads. After I broke both front d70 stubs in one day, I went to 2 1/2 ton rockwells. It has held together since last Sept. with no breakage. I took the transmission out last week, just to look at the input, I had not checked it in 3 years. It looks like the day I put it in. I will have the pics here this evening. My adapter is 8" plus 12" for the other 465. This hurts the short wb people, but my truck is at 120".

This is probably in the archives somwhere.... there is a guy in Salt lake City that will mate sm465s using a plate. I saw them years ago at Six States Truck parts. I can dig up the info if needed. I understand he still does it, the demand was not real high so six states sends people direct to him.

lemme know if you need more.
Divorced would be way cheaper if you have the length..imho

Couple things...
Toploader- What's the overall length of the dual SM465's w/205? Also your breakage was due to both being in granny and a heavy right foot?

Bennett- Any info you have on this would be great. While divorced would be cheaper, mated sounds like a little more bulletproof. So is this one of those places that if I ship two trannies out there I get one unit back???

Toploader you care to mate some trannys for a price?

Don't want to let this die... Seriously interested in mating up some trannies in the next couple weeks. Toploader you get my mail?

Gaylons Driveline.. 801-768-3171.. ask for the owner ( Gaylon) I think. I spoke at length with the guy about it and he gave me all the info and the Fellow that does the conversion. I had all that on another pc that puked. Sorry to dump it back in your lap but try them and if ya get nowhere I will follow up Thurs am.

seth, got your e-mail, When I broke the 70 stubs, I was in 2nd- 4th gear, with a heavy foot. The torque multiplication in double granny would break everything at idle, if there was enough traction. Also trying to accelerate the truck by mashing the throttle in double 1st does not work either. It is just geared to low, just makes a lot of noise with not much movement.
