Hello, I want to get more into custom fabrication. I see quite a few people on here welding exo's and what not. What kind of welder are they using? MIG? I want to buy a welder to do these things. Any suggestions? and what accesories will i need?

Thanks.

First thing: Take a welding class and learn how to weld proficiently before you start welding stuff that your life may depend on(cages, steering, suspension)

I would get at least a 175 amp mig machine. These run off of 220V.

definately take the classes, never know you might hate it. Better to find out before you spend a few thousand dollars on tools. Also then you will know enough about what you are doing to not have to depend on the internet for answers.

I took some classes in high school, and my friend has a mig welder. However I just want to see what other people are using, and i just want to be sure on what to use. I would consider myself a novice welder though, so i would need some practice. As for the internet comment. I know people who have been into cars and trucks for their entire lives and still get on the internet for info. However i can't sit there and pick their brain whenever i want, and also the internet has more information than any one person ever will and it's by far the best and fastest learning tool available, so I take advantage of that.

This seems to be the best 4x4 site on the net, and there are quite a few people on here that are really smart. So I come here to get the information I need. Also, what forum should i be posting in?

It blatently says in the title "The newbie-friendly forum to ask those "dumb newbie" questions without fear of flaming." I see there is a shop and tool forum, but i felt my question was suited more for this forum, beings it was a "newbie" question and i wouldn't get "flamed". Which I obviously got flamed.

I'm just here to learn, and i'll ask stupid questions just to get more than one persons opinion on the matter. So at any rate, thanks for the responses and I'll look into some welding rigs and getting some good training.

lol.... no, you didn't even come close to being flamed.

most of the people on here are using a MIG welder. the class isn't a bad idea, but MIG isn't something you can't pick up on your own with practice.

understandable. I post in other forums where i am usually the one answering questions. It is rather annoying.
