: Looking for ideas on how to frame and trim front fenders
slickrock 02-10-2007, 10:59 PM OK guys. I need help that only the pirate board can give:grinpimp: . I need to trim my front fenders a bit. When I slap on 36s, I will tear out the overhang just below the turn signals on my 40. So can anyone give me ideas on how I can do this? I want to do more than just cut them out as they will be too weak and flexy. I would like to make some type of frame or reinforcement to make them stronger. Maybe a bit more then just cutting and bending up the bottom. I was thinking I could take the fenders off and use some square stock (or roudn stock) as a frame and weld it onto the sheet metal to the trimmed fenders. Ideas? So what are some things you have done, thought about, or seen that could help me out? Some pictures of my issue can be seen here:

slickrock 02-11-2007, 08:13 AM Metal tech has an awesome product. But I want to give my hand to fabrication this time. I have the tools and a low budget (as a usual broke teacher with a morgage). Charles, could you post some close up? I would like to keep the fenders as stock as possible but I dig that look too.
ROCK HUGGER 02-11-2007, 10:25 AM Don't ruin the stock fenders by cutting that part off, it still not enough room to clear 36's. That lip won't be your problem. The only way you will clear 36's with that suspension is to move the fender up higher.

Don't forget, when you catch some air they also double as wings :D

Thats how mine are, just cut the outer lip off and they clear my 37's pretty good, though the tire will still get into the fender every so often. It's a temporary solution (3 years). Tube fenders would be better because you can sit/stand on them when working under the hood, although that nice round tube doesn't slice you up like the cut fenders do :D
lc tpi 02-11-2007, 05:43 PM a nice and easy way is to get some 1/2" round stock and form it to the inside of the lip. then take a body hammer and dolly and roll the lip around the 1/2 " rod. take your time it will come out clean then tack the lip to the rod.finish by smoothing it with a sanding disc.will be sturdy enough to keep the tires from doing it damage.

But try it on a spring under rig.
woooody 02-11-2007, 07:15 PM I had Luke at 4x4 labs do up a set of tubes. A couple of years back, Mudrak plasma'ed my fenders, we cut the outer lip about 1/2, and the front corner almost an inch. Then last year Luke installed some tubing for me. We were able to keep the stock look, but improved the clearance. The mount for the turn signal --JUST-- clears.

I sit as high as an SOA rig in the front and level with my rear. If you looked carefully in person, the fenders have some problems. My pass. side was curlled up under the turn signals and I straighted them out and lots of pot marks from rust. If I was restoring, I would need new fenders. I do plan on bumpt stops that will not allow the wheels to go any higher from where they are now (1/4" lower probably).
Ross,
Thanks for the pictures. Looks like a starting point for ideas for me.
