You don't have to soak the bands and you don't have to soak the clutches.

It is recommended to soak the clutches for 15mins, and I always at least brush the bands with atf till it does not soak in anymore

I bet that if you stop doing that, you will notice no difference in clutch life, application, or durability in your transmissions. That's what I've found anyway.

How you going to know? You gunna run it for the life of the trans without soaking, then rebuild with soaked plates and run it again? There is really no way of knowing for sure is there. I do know one thing thou. I own a transmission shop, and I do everything that is recommended every time I build a trans. Comebacks cost money and time!

I don't own one, but I've been the right hand man at one for seven years. The guy who does own it and has been training me has been rebuilding for 40 years. I just don't see comebacks related to non-soaked clutches or bands.

I understand what you are saying, plus it is easier to get the clutches and hubs to line up without atf on them, esp tight clearance drums.

I soak my bands with my frictions. I check all my stack ups dry, then soak them as I install bushings and lip seals. It is recommended to soak them for min 15 minutes. I figure they spend their life in ATF might as well start it early.
